Opportunity: Rejection and Acceptance

In June I drove down two hours away from home to San Jose for a journalism program. I spent two weeks there, in what helped me understand the meaning of print journalism.I'll come back to the experiences I had with having the opportunity to introduce myself as a student reporter for the San Jose Mercury News later, only because I have something else that's been on my mind for a while.I want to admit that before I began the two weeks in San Jose, I never thought my experiences could ever compare…See More

Take Off to Lead

Birds don’t stay in the same place for long. Flying is the least of it for me; it isn’t quite as magical as the act of moving forward. Birds go from one location to another, with almost constant motion and little stop them. I’ve always wanted to be like a bird in this way, both in motion and growth. To take flight for myself though, I have encountered doubt in my ability. Hesitant like I always am before taking off aboard an airplane, I grip onto the seat handles and I find it hard to just for…See More

Rags to Riches and the American Dream: The Reality

Gatsby's got me good lately, but I'm not referring to Leonardo DiCaprio or the lavish movie he recently starred in.I recently read The Great Gatsby in my English class and the book just got me to thinking about much of what the United States in Gatsby and Nick's time was like. Then again, I also drew parallels to the facts, dates, people and events that have been juggling around in my head lately thanks to my AP US History class. What has got me so involved in my thinking about the book though…See More

Our Chicano Crowd at the Capitol

With news reporters watching, news station cameras rolling, and people passing by, I felt the power of our crowd. I might have been standing among one-hundred and nineteen other students, but this was different from standing in my own high school junior class. Our crowd was standing in front of the Sacramento Capitol building and even with the vast differences in hometowns and high schools, I felt connected like I never had before. These people had changed me. Their stories and their faces were…See More

Seventeen and Stressed

*Takes a deep breath before typing..*It is junior year and I've been sitting here staring at the same page of my history text book for all of twenty minutes. I've only had a hard time turning the page since I've been stressing out. I want to get so much done that, sometimes I just can't do much of anything. Then again, college has also been on my mind. And if I'm going to be honest, the mere mention of the word college raises my stress level. You still have a year, my momma says. But having…See More

On Same Love

With the current events of the case in review before the Supreme Court, I was not surprised this week when I came across a YouTube music video making a gay rights statement. It did surprise me though, which artist was making the statement. Like many others, I have heard Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" single all over radio stations. And I doubt many would disagree with me when I made the generalization that rappers are seldom pro-gay rights. My generalization does not stand though, not with…See More

My CLYLP Experience

Last summer, I headed out to Sacramento for a week-long leadership conference. It was sitting in a state university lecture hall, feeling at ease with other California high school leaders, that I realized something. I felt motivated to keep going in the direction that had brought me here. Then for all of thirty minutes, I was shocked. On a projector in front of me, I saw college degree-attainment statistics for California’s students, with those for Latinos shown to be the dimmest.  The presenter…See More

How did you hear about Latinitas?
I had actually kept on running into the Latinitas website earlier this year. In search for scholarships and college tips for junior high school students, I really just somehow found the site. I didn't necessarily find a scholarship but I did find an opportunity to write. I was so excited when I did learn about this.
