Unique comes from Culture

Culture is formed through language, beliefs, religion, and traditions amongst other things. Basically, culture takes part in every person's life on a daily basis. All that you do to carry out traditions, the languages and terms you speak with, and religious practices shape who you are. Think about all the things that make us unique. Not only do we all look very different, but everyone has differing opinions that also lead to the individuality in the world.I come from a long line of Mexican…See More

Language and... Culture?

I've had a difficult time trying to see how to answer today's topic, but decided to just put something rather than waste my time in a failed attempt to find the exact answer. When looking up the definition of culture, one might stumble across the words art, music, religion, beliefs, rituals, and language (among many others). Language is one of the dominant features making up culture. Language is our communication tool and allows us to converse thoughts and opinions that eventually form our…See More

My Favorite Hispanic Tradition

I feel like Hispanics are exposed to many traditions which help us come closer to our families. My personal favorite is El Dia de Los Muertos. Growing up surrounded by parents who worked and went to school, I never really got the opportunity to experience El Dia de Los Muertos at home. I believe I was six years old when I finally got a chance to see that it was more than just scattering calaberas around the house.I remember traveling with my mom and dad across the border to Cd. Juarez. As with…See More

The Color Run... My Experience

I’ve never really been much of a fitness person, but I’ve always ran as my hobby.  About a month ago my cousin and her boyfriend, who have participated in various marathons, invited me to go to the Color Run with them.  I was naturally overcome with hesitation. Yes, I used to be a cross country runner in middle school and the past two years of high school, but running with them could be presented as quite a challenge. I wasn’t even on the varsity team! My mom could see the look of hesitation on…See More

Mexican Folktale

Posted on October 11, 2013 at 10:39pm 1 Comment

Hmm... What to chose? What to chose? Our Hispanic culture is enriched with folktales and myths that help teach us lessons. I remember growing up listening to my parents frightening me with el cucuy and la llorona.

I remember looking through the cupboard one time looking for a mug for my chocolate caliente. I found a mug that said El Callejon Del Beso. Hmm, I had never heard of that before, so I decided to look into this Mexican folktale. It began with two young people, Ana and…

Is there a difference?

Posted on October 10, 2013 at 11:20pm 2 Comments

Latina? Hispanic? Chicana? There's a difference? In all honesty, I've never truly sat down to think this through.I've always thought of myself as a Hispanic girl. I decided to look up the political meaning of each and compare them. To my surprise, this became extremely difficult. Every website differed within definitions; apparently the definition differs in terms to who uses these words. I think we can all agree on the fact that Chicano is most notable related to a derogatory term. Mexican-…

Artistic... Me??

Posted on October 9, 2013 at 10:10pm 0 Comments

I don't necessarily consider myself an artist, especially since I can't even draw realistic things. I had been in art class in school since middle school. Unfortunately this year, I wasn't able to fit the class in my schedule. Yes, it crushed my heart. But luckily my school  has an art club and that has been my savior. I know I will never pursue it, but…

Self-Confidence... Do you have it?

Posted on October 9, 2013 at 8:37pm 0 Comments

Self-Confidence might be one of the hardest things to obtain and sustain in life. We have grown in a tough society full of images of people we "should" look like, think like, and even things we should say. Think of all the times you have looked through a magazine and noticed the newest headlines, "So and so... Gained 50 pounds!" Consistently, pop culture attempts to define the "perfect" body that one should have. They achieve this by constantly scrutinizing artists and actresses. Honestly,…
