the most dreaded time of the year

The end of the semester is always my least favorite part of the year because of all the cumulative projects, papers, finals, presentations, etc. I tend to get overwhelmed to the point where I don't want to do anything and just sleep all my days away so that I can avoid responsibilities. If you're like me, the end of the year stress does not help your anxiety at all. The first thing I do before I get too overwhelmed is to make a list of everything I have to do. Once I write it down, I feel a lot…See More

My experience at SXSW

For weeks I was looking foward for SXSW and the anticipation was killing me. It finally came around and it exceeded my expectations. I went for my first time last year and saw Best Coast, Toro Y Moi, and Mac Demarco and I loved it. I went to Austin on Wednesday and met up with my friends at the Mohawk and saw Charli XCX, Angel Olsen, and Kelela. I was so excited for the days to come, especially since I was staying with my best friend from high school. After I had met up with my best friend, we…See More

Perceptions

Through my childhood, I was surrounded by strong Latina icons and artists and I somewhat took that for granted. As I grew up, I realized that Latinas barely had a voice outside of this little bubble I lived in. I wouldn't understand why my mom would get so excited when shows like The Garcia Family aired on Nick or Gotta Kick it Up! on Disney. It wasn't until later that I realized how media severely lacked Latina voices. And for a while, I didn't embrace my culture as a Mexicana. I shoved it all…See More

13 year old me

When I was 13 years old, I didn't know how to put on makeup yet and my biggest concern in life was that there must be something wrong with me because all my friends had a boyfriend but I didn't. I had to start thinking about where I'd go to high school and even college. I was really insecure at the time and constantly put myself down. I always felt like was never good enough for some reason.I wish that someone had told me not to give into too many of your emotions. So often I make decisions on…See More

Latina lifestyle

Through my childhood, my parents surrounded me with cultural poems about being a proud Mexicana or art pieces influenced by Mexican folklore and I am so thankful that I got to experience all of that. Living in San Antonio makes it easy to experience Mexican culture through the abundance of Mexican restaurants, Latino art galleries, etc. which really helped me embrace being a Latina. During adolescence, I sometimes wished I could be lighter or look more European because most of the people I…See More

F for Feminism

Through my adolescent experience, I paid no attention to feminism or identifying myself as a feminist. I had moments here and there where I'd talk with friends about double standards about sexuality, not nothing too in depth. It was more like, "hey, it bothers me that boys can have sex all they want and people will praise them but when a girl has sex with one guy, she's a slut." Through high school, I would judge girls and what they would do and what they wore and wrote them off as stupid or…See More

The Portrait of a Latina and Her Struggles

It's a given that being a girl is difficult in a male driven world, but it's especially hard when you're a Latina (or any other minority). Through my personal experience, I've faced too many false comparisons, too many expectations, and too many obstacles. It's hard dealing with issues like this on a daily basis, but it's possible to overcome them.  Most men and society as a whole expect girls to be a certain weight, have nice hair, not too much makeup, and the "right" clothing. If you're…See More

Loving yourself is a life long process

Some days, I feel like I'm la reina del mundo and everyone should bow down to me. I feel as confident and carefree as a Beyonce song. But I also have days where I look in the mirror until I can't find a single thing I like about myself. I'll start to compare myself to girls I see on tumblr or girls with perfect bodies and perfect hair. It's a self deprecating spiral that I know all too well. These days are unavoidable, but it's important to remember that these feelings of hatred are fleeting. I…See More
