Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

I was reading an article today that talked about Eastridge. Some people may not know what this is so I shall explain a little bit. Eastridge is a neighborhood on the Eastside of El Paso and each year this large neighborhood decorates for Christmas. Many people go to drive around the neighborhood to see the houses that are decorated beautifully. While I was reading the article it spoke of how the tradition began with two neighbors competing amongst one another and then carried over to other neighbors as they were encouraged to decorate. However, this tradition may slowly be dying due to the fact that people are choosing not to decorate as well as their decorations being stole or vandalized. I went last year with a friend of mine who goes to play in front of his friends home who lives in this neighborhood. The weather was so cold last year but regardless my friend along with a few other musicians sat outside and played Christmas songs for people driving through the neighborhood. I couldn't help but be so touched by such a great thing that they were doing. I found this article quite sad because this was a tradition that someone had started and others are bringing that tradition to an end. It upsets me that people don't realize how much effort, time, and money that these people put not only into their homes but to the joy of other people. In order for those lights to be on they have to pay the bills that come with it, they are not discounted any type of money, but rather do it for the people of El Paso. I feel that this is something that during the Christmas season more people should take into consideration that these people aren't decorating for themselves but for others to go by and visit this neighborhood. I know that this tradition has not only made one for the neighborhood but one for others. My parents use to take my sister and I every year when we were younger to see the lights and I still encourage this visit. This neighborhood has not only started a tradition for themselves but for me as well. I guess my message out of the whole thing is that others should realize not only the beauty of things but the time, consideration, and effort that others do for people during this holiday season. Others should be blessed that people are willing to help them experience Christmas joy and instead of vandalizing and stealing they should embrace the Christmas spirit within others.
