LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

I recently had a Thanksgiving potluck dinner with my friends at college. We each brought a different dish that ended up creating an excellent dinner.

This fun dinner with friends sparked my thinking in terms of how well this applies to American culture. During the first Thanksgiving, the Native Americans brought their own cultural dishes while the British brought theirs. This tradition continues today in a much bigger way. Just walking down the streets of Washington, DC, I see an Ethiopian restaurant on the corner next to a Dominican restaurant, next to an Italian restaurant, next to something else and so on.

The diversity of our communities can be shown directly through the different types of food we eat. Yet, these differences also bring us together. As I pass each restaurant I know that when I look inside I will not see just Ethiopians or just Italians eating inside each respective establishment. But rather, this widespread phenomenon allows us to share in the universal tradition of: eating.

I hope that next time you see a strange, new restaurant whose name you cannot pronounce, that you step inside and try someone else's cuisine. You never know, you may have just found your new favorite spot!

I like your post. I like that you enjoy the simple multicultural lessons of a simple and yet maybe controversial dinner. You are right to encourage others to learn not to fear to try new things. Food is amazing! Also,I'm actually going to have a Thanksgiving potluck with my friends this Sunday too. I  can't wait! We are going to have a Franklin's turkey and everyone is going to bring something to the table. It's going to be fantastic. Keep writing! :P
