Ever been volunteering?
Ever volunteered on the condition that you did it on your own?
Project Share is a local volunteer service that gets volunteers to distrubute food for people in the area who may not have enough food to eat.
I've been on their side of the line before. I would go to these places with my mom, standing in these lines for boxed lasagna and can food. It's nice to be on the other side, helping those who clearly need more than a can of peaches.
More than anything, the little communication you make with one or two people always makes them smile. I find that being treated like any other person, makes anyone feel like a part of the community.
I never knew that races outside of the Hispanic race went hungry everyday. This could be because I grew up in Texas were hispanics are the majority. Carlisle, PA is filled with hungry Americans. Race is not the issue. It just surprised me to see that the majority that came into this shelter were white people, then black and 1 or 2 hispanics.
It's even better to know that I lend a helping hand to those that need it the most. I love, love volunteering.
Try your local food bank and volunteer. I think most people forget that it isn't just the holidays when people go hungry, but all year long.
One thing different from past years at Project Share is the selling of tomatoe, avocados and bean plants. I see sustainable practices for simpler food growing. These methods will enable a greener future.
Go out and volunteer, I promise you, you'd feel great about it!

I am in college in Chambersburg, PA!
So close!
It's good to know I am not alone. :)
Omg! Do you live in Carlisle, PA?! I went to Dickinson College so I lived in Carlisle for 4 years! And with my sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma we used to go to Project Share...
