One of my favorite cities in the world is going through some tough times right now. I’ve been keeping up with all of my friends who live in New York City, following their documentation mostly via Instagram, and I am so thankful that they are all okay. No one I know personally has been seriously affected by the storm, but I am very aware that many people in the multiple areas hit by Sandy have not been so fortunate.
There are lots of ways you can get involved, whether it’s volunteering your time or donating money to a disaster-relief organization. It’s very easy to donate to the Red Cross (text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation), Salvation Army (text STORM to 80888 to make a $10 donation), and to the Human Society (text HUMANE to 80888 to make a $10 donation) using 21st century technology. Please visit this site for an extensive list of ways you can help.
My friend Xavier posted on Facebook a very clever way to get involved, especially if you’re a lady planning to go out the following few weeks:
“Ladies, when you’re at the bar tonight and a creepy dude asks for your number and hands you his phone… Text REDCROSS to 90999 so he’ll donate $10 to hurricane relief :)”
Any way you can help, please do.
