If you are a college student who has moved away from home like I am, homesickness is probably creeping up on you. I find the fall semester to be the time I get homesick the most. This weekend I heard from several people that they were heading back home for a couple of days, and it made me extremely jealous. The change of season along with rainy days in Austin this week really hasn’t helped my case of homesickness. Because I am 8 hours away from my hometown, the first time I am able to go home is during the Thanksgiving holiday and that’s still about a month and a half away! Even though I haven’t figured out the cure for homesickness, I have discovered a few things that help me keep my mind off missing home.

1.Food

In my opinion food can cure anything. Last weekend I cooked tacos for my roommate and I, and even though they tasted nothing like my mom’s it helped fulfill my craving for a home-cooked meal. Last semester we also baked our favorite comfort food almost every weekend, COOKIES! It has also become a personal mission of mine to find the best Mexican (NOT Tex-Mex) food in Austin. Discovering new places to eat with friends during the weekend really helps keep my mind off wanting to be home.

2. Shopping (Or in my case window-shopping)

Buying or trying on new clothes and shoes can make just about any girl forget her worries. My roommate and I find ourselves making random trips to Target when we are feeling a little down. As it gets closer to the holidays we love looking for cute decorations to make our apartment feel a little more like home!

3. Movie Nights and Sleepovers

I don’t think you ever get too old for a sleepover, or a night filled with chick-flicks! Some of the most fun I have had in college has happened during a girl’s night in! The worst thing to do when you are homesick is to be alone. Surrounding myself with the girls who make me laugh until I cry is always my favorite thing to do when I am missing home. It feels comforting to know I am not the only one who is dealing with homesickness!

4. A Night On The Town

Getting dressed up and exploring the city is something I love to do to keep my mind off wanting to go home. Trying something new like music festivals, kayaking, or karaoke always has some pretty fun results. My hometown doesn’t have much to do, so I love to take advantage of the fact that I made the choice to attend college in such a fun city.

5. Being A Bookworm

Books have always had the power to transport me to another world. I love getting wrapped up in a good book when I’m feeling bored or lonely. I have found that inspirational books about powerful women not only keep me entertained but also motivate to keep pursuing my goals!

Leaving home for college isn’t easy, but I have found that fighting off homesickness is! If you are ever feeling homesick know that you are not alone, and if you are like me and can’t make a trip home try keeping yourself busy with the things on my list. Stay positive ladies, Thanksgiving break is just around the corner! I’d love to hear from my fellow college students, what are some of the things that help you get over being homesick?

Veronica: You made me so jealous last weekend lol! But I agree talking to family and friends always makes me feel so much better!

Laura: Thank you! You made my day!  :)

Sonia: I hope you are having a blast in Washington D.C.! I'm glad you found a Latino community over there, all the events that Latino orgs put on are always a blast and remind me how much I love my culture! I'm counting down the days with you :)

Living in the East Coast far away from my hometown in Texas, I think meeting other Latinas and Latinos can help you be a little bit less homesick. I miss my cultura!!! I would suggest joining Latin@ clubs/organizations that understand our culture. I went to a mariachi fest party last Saturday and it made me appreciate my fellow Latin@s that are also far away from home yet keeping their roots alive. There was REAL Mexican food, lots of Latin@s from all over the states and Latin America, Latin music playing on the dance floor and some real live Mariachis! I won't be home til the holidays so I'm also trying to hang in there. :)

This is definitely a good post for anyone that plans to leave their home or has left their home should read! It is extremely hard to leave but it is also worth it. I went back home this weekend and couldn't stop crying because I'm back but one has to remember that we must sacrifice in order to move forward! Good things will come! I hope *crosses fingers*

Also, I would add talking to friends or family over the phone to this list!
