Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

When I was in high school I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life and which college I would attend. All I knew was that I had to start somewhere. I was not very involved in high school or any clubs that they offered but I always made sure to keep my grades up. What I was doing, which was not much was still a lot more than what my peers at the time were doing. For the most part most of my friends at the time were not interested in attending college and they were not used to keeping their grades up.

When it came time for senior year in high school I had a moment where I realized that I wanted more for myself so I decided to enroll at the University of Texas at El Paso. When I started college I found myself alone because all my peers from high school were out partying, starting families or just staying at home all day. What I then realized was that I wanted to be around people who understood me and could value education the way I did and still do. I then got a job on campus and pledged for a sorority, which led me to meet a whole community of people that were like me and shared my goals and aspirations and I recognized that these were the people that I wanted to surround myself with. After getting involved around campus, I quickly started to regret not being as involved in high school, which is what I recommend to all high school students.

Of course, I did not just leave all these “old” friends high and dry, but gradually throughout the years, they have made their way out of my life because they ultimately did not understand what I was going through. Along with this they had also proven themselves to never really be good friends. I am a senior at UTEP now and I have been fortunate enough to meet strong and independent women that I am proud to call my friends because they push me to reach my goals and I push them to reach theirs, that I believe is what friendship really is.
