LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

I feel like this is a cliche answer, but when I was younger, I was influenced by Selena.

I remember being a little girl and begging and pleading for the Selena cassette so I could play it on my Walkman. It was black and it was my favorite thing in the world. I think before my Selena cassette, the only other cassette I had was one on which I had recorded songs from the radio. Once I got the Selena cassette, I played it over and over and over. Unlike the me of today who needs hundreds and hundreds of songs, the young me of back then was content with Amor Prohibido. I sang along to it, made up dances, fell asleep listening to it, and woke up with my finger ready to press Play.

At the time, I (probably) didn't know what I was singing or what any of her songs were about, but now that I'm older I feel like I can appreciate Selena much better than I did back then. Not only was her music fun and something I could really dance to, it is really empowering. In her song, "Si Una Vez", Selena sings about a man who didn't appreciate her and who she was no longer going to love. She sings about him coming back and regretting his choice but she is no longer there for him. She preaches about loving yourself and standing up for yourself no matter what. In "Ya No" y "La Llamada", she sings the same thing; she isn't going to be taking this cheating man back. I LOVE IT. I never even realized that when I was screaming, "SI UNA VEZ DIJE QUE TE AMABA, HOY ME ARREPIENTO" as a young girl.

I think my favorite thing about Selena now is that almost every single Latina I know adores Selena. We can all bond over our love of Amor Prohibido and agree that it is one of the best albums we've ever come across. It's an instant connection we all have.

Selena taught us well.
