Latinitas Hot Topic: 2011 MTV Movie Awards

Last night was a great night to be stationed in front of the television for a few hours. The Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat met up for game three, Chicharito showed off his awesome soccer skills, and of course there was my personal pick, the 2011 MTV Movie Awards.

Tuning in for the award show has become a tradition of mine. Last night's show did not disappoint. Like, expected Twilight dominated the awards show, taking home everything from Best Movie to Best Kiss. I was grateful for my rewind button when R. Patz shocked everyone and celebrated his Best Kiss award by laying a wet one on Taylor Lautner.

However, my favorite moments of the night came from the ladies. Reese Witherspoon was honored with the Generation Award, and she gave a speech that made some cringe, and at the same time empowered the ladies. Reese reminded us that good girls can make it in showbiz too. She told young girls that we don't have to take inappropriate pictures or videos to be successfuI in Hollywood. It was good to finally hear some great advice from an actress I have always looked up to.

And of course we all couldn't help but smile when Latinita, Alexys Nycole Sanchez from Grown Ups took home the golden popcorn for Best Line From A Movie, " I wanna get chocolate wasted!". She made the cutest speech and won over a huge applause from the audience.

When it was all over though I was left wondering, why isn't there more positive women to look up to in Hollywood. Also, why are there are hardly any award winning movies that represent the growing Latino nation! I believe my generation of Latina women have our work cut out for us.

I must agree with this as well. However one movie that is always on the front of my brain when thinking of Latino/ Chicano movies is WALK OUT. It's about the students not being taught about Latino culture as well as being punished for speaking Spanish. This is also taking place during the time of Cesar Chavez  leading the migrant farm workers. It is a very good movie, and I recommend a do watch!!

I feel like such a dummie because I completely forgot to watch the MTV Movie Awards!! But I'm sure MTV will replay them again and again for the next month :D Anyway, I completely agree with you Dominique, we need a big time Hollywood movie that touches on the life and issues of the Latino population. We are certainly a fast growing culture and I know that a movie like this will make it big! You should get started on writing the screenplay, I'll be your manager ;D
