Yesterday I used skype for the first time ever!
Yes, I know, I know, I'm a late bloomer. I know skype has been around for a while. My friend actually used to use skype years ago on my computer to talk to her boyfriend in Germany. But I never got around to learning how to use it.
I got my own skype a few months ago. I have friends that live in all different parts of the country and world. I thought it'd be a nice way to connect. I never actually figured it out though. I'm not online that often and well when I am, they are not.
We communicate mostly through Facebook which is great, but skype just takes it to another level.
Yesterday, I was talking to my friend that moved to Washington D.C. in December. We were chatting up on Facebook and he asked me if I had skype. I told him I did and he said that he would skype me. And he did! It was pretty cool.
It's pretty crazy how much we have advanced in technology and how connected we are. A few decades ago, communicating with someone that lived in another city meant writing hand written letters and sending them through the post office (snail mail) and expensive telephone calls. Now there's cell phones with text messaging and internet. There's a number of social media websites (most popular one being Facebook, of course); there's email and instant messaging and skype!
I love being able to know how my friends are doing when we don't live in the same cities anymore. I miss them terribly so this definitely helps keep in touch. Technology never replaces being with someone face to face but it helps keep the friendship bond tight.
