Hmm... What to chose? What to chose? Our Hispanic culture is enriched with folktales and myths that help teach us lessons. I remember growing up listening to my parents frightening me with el cucuy and la llorona.

I remember looking through the cupboard one time looking for a mug for my chocolate caliente. I found a mug that said El Callejon Del Beso. Hmm, I had never heard of that before, so I decided to look into this Mexican folktale. It began with two young people, Ana and Carlos. I guess you could say that it is an interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. They instantly fell in love. Every day after work, Carlos would stop by Ana's house. Legend has it that at the beginning they would only smile at each other, exchanging no words. Slowly, Carlos gathered the courage to begin talking to Ana. As time went on, they began planning a big wedding and hope of a future together was sprung. Matilde, Ana's mother accepted the relationship, but Ana's father never would. He had planned to get her married off to a rich man who lived in Spain. Ana's father decided to confront Carlos and forbid him from seeing her. Carlos and Ana refused, so Carlos decided to rent a room next to her's and talk to each other from the balconies. Ana's father found out and decided to kill Carlos, yet instead killed his daughter half asleep. Carlos went to Ana's rescue but it was too late. Ana died in Carlos' arms, with only a kiss goodbye from him.

Legend has it that if you kiss someone at the callejon; that person will be your one true love. An eternal love as strong as Ana's and Carlos' will grow. Hmm... I guess I need to travel down to El Callejon del Beso.
