Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Hi Everyone!

My name is Lucero Limas and I just joined the Latinitas family about a month ago. I have been apart of a workshop and have an after-school club. In this short time that I've had with the organization, I have become more humbled. Before I get into my month experience, I would like to just share a little about myself.

I'm a dual major student in Biology and Psychology at The University of Texas at El Paso, and I aspire to be an Army Trauma Doctor. I'm currently in the Army Reserves. For the early part of my life I lived in Chicago and moved to El Paso when I was about eight years old. I've lived here ever since. I'm a true bilingual; my education was bilingual from elementary school to high school. I like to hike, read, learn, and get to know new people who are goal oriented. That's me in a nut shell.

In this last month being part of the organization has truly humbled me. When I was working the Business Chica workshop, I got to interact with girls from Southwest Key. These are girls who came from South America and were caught trying to cross the border. These girls were younger than me and had been through so much. To see them smile when they would talk about their dreams and families just warmed my heart. By this time, I had only a few days into the organization. They really did impact my life, I only interacted with them for a day, but they truly have a place in my heart. I wish them nothing but the best. The girls in my after-school club are truly amazing as well. They are between 8-12 years old and are full of imagination. I've seen these girls once a week for three weeks now, and they remind me of me when I was little. They have no worries in the world and just have fun being themselves.

What I have learned in this last month, is there are people who have it a little harder than you, but they appreciate what they have. No matter the circumstances. I look forward to the time I have with the organization. I look forward to the lesson the girls will give me. I also look forward to the experience with my community and learn what my community needs. This way once I become a doctor, I know what I need to do to help inspire girls to pursue their dreams.
