I wish more girls would embrace their natural beauty.
Then again, I understand that the media is a bigger influence on their every day beauty routine. I only say this because I saw several 10 year old girls wearing tons of makeup. Sure, they were a part of a dance folklorico, it just made it seem strange. It was like looking at miniature adults. This also made me think of the recent Beyonce photo alterations by Roberto Cavalli, would make any young girl feel awkward.
I was sure he would come out with the statement that "these were sketches" and not at all what the company tried to promote, but really? Aren't all photos that make it on to magazine covers fake? Aren't the photos hiding real flaws, real character? I think so.
The other day, a nine year old girl told me, " Y tu pelo, lo tienes como Shakira. No te importa si te metes en la agua? Que pensaran la gente?" which translates to: "..and your hair, you have it like Shakira. You dont care that you get in the water? What would the people think?"
My hair is dyed blonde rather it is bleached. So everytime I get into the water it curls up. So, I said, " You know, I am having fun! If I cared about what others thought, I'll never be happy. Wouldn't you want to be happy?"
This is the moment she looked at me and smiled. Really smiled and said, "Si!"
She then proceeded to dunk her head into the water. She was laughing as she sprung back up. Oh the innocence of kids. I love love young girls. As much as they are influenced by media, real people, real human contact can also help them connect and influence future behavior.
This is one horribly ugly sketch. Why was it leaked online. I can't believe a ten year old told me about it before I heard anything of it first.
With confidence ladies, with confidence.
