Nowadays it seems that you cannot scroll down your Facebook newsfeed with out seeing posts relating to the Kardashian-Jenner clan and similar "celebrities" and their lives. This poses a problem to me because people are being pushed (particularly women) to look and act according to the way their favorite celebrities would. Rather than pay any mind to what is going on in the world American media forces women to believe that these celebrities are someone they should aspire to be. Lately I cannot seem to get a break from seeing something about Kylie Jenner on my Facebook feed and I think that is pretty odd. It seems that our culture is so obsessed with whether or not she has gotten plastic surgery, what she is wearing or even who she "might" be dating. Although I don't blame Kylie for being the way she is, I mean she technically is a product of her environment, our culture places too much importance on her and like celebrities' lives. The fact is that Kylie is a 17 year old girl being hyper-sexualized in the media regardless of the fact that she is underage. This poses as a huge problem to me because I feel that mainstream media is making it seem as if sexualizing underage girls is ok. I feel that young girls look at the sexy poses and the lifestyle she projects and aspire to emulate it rather than look up to a woman who is making a difference in the world. Again, I am not bashing Kylie personally because I feel that she was brought up in a toxic environment that places commercial worth over things like education and advocacy. I know that the Kardashian-Jenner clan might not have been trying to be any sort of role models to women around the world but the fact is that they are, and to a mass amount of people. I think that this type of influence and power that they have is huge but rather than use that in ways that makes the world a better place they choose to focus more on what they buy and how much money they can receive. I definitely believe that these images project everything that is wrong with our society that sets women back from being represented truthfully in media. Rather than focusing on women that are making great strides in the world and making it a better place for other women to be treated equally- mainstream media imposes images of women like those in the Kardashian-Jenner clan as having much more worth than the woman making the game changing strides. It is important to educate young girls more susceptible to emulating these images on what the messages behind the images mean in order for them to prioritize their lives in a way that values things such as education and helping others rather than what designer clothes they should be wearing.
