Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

I used to know a girl

who stared on to the ground.

A sad looking brunette with

Hair that went all the way down

Past her back…trailing her waist.

Her brown locks billowed at every turn of

The pages of the book she kept beneath her slumped neck.

I felt sorry,

Indeed I did

Until I realized that girl was me.

I would like to ask her

“What happened between then and now?”

Until I realize my smile is a self reflected frown.

She frowns because she has an idea. Just an idea intertwined between her

eyes and unwilling to let it go.

Everyone stares in their doubtful way of the manner in which

she chooses to perform.

“It’s fake,”

They say

She is late, always late                                                                                                       Photo courtesy: Nayely Davila

To smile, to care, to play

So she sits alone once again, deaf to the ears of plenty.

She realizes the mirror has played her.

It isn’t me

She is nothing, but herself. Alone and

unwilling to become anything more
