The 6 Pillars on Becoming a Better Person :)

Character. We all have one. Some may have a good one, while others... not so much. Based on the recent statements made by Donald Trump, his character lacks some major qualities, while Oprah has a character made of gold and free gifts.

But what exactly IS character?

According to whatwillmatter.com, it is "a morally neutral term describing the nature of a person in terms of major qualities." How you acquire these qualities depends on how you deal with everyday situations, and extraordinary pressures and temptations.

So lets say you're driving down I-10 and you nearly get pummeled by a semi-truck (yes, this happened to me.) It's so easy to get angry and start driving erratically, nearly crashing into anything you see, but this isn't the right way to handle this situation. Yes, it's okay to get angry, but deal with that anger in a good way. I personally use workouts and boxing as a way to get rid of all of the pent-up anger that accumulates in each day, but I also like to make things that I find on Pinterest to release whatever is left over. Breathing techniques and meditation can also help, but I'll add another blog on that, soon.

Now, in order to keep this blog as brief as possible, I am not going to go over the difference between reputation and character. Instead, I'll leave this quote by the honest Abraham Lincoln to help you understand: "Character is like a tree, and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing." -Abraham Lincoln. Try not to worry too much about your reputation, and focus more on WHO you are, and what your tree blooms, not on what shadow it's casting. If your tree is blooming and teeming with life, and love, there will be no shadow for others to see.

With all of that out of the way, how is YOUR character? You can evaluate yourself with these "6 pillars of character," courtesy of charactercounts.com.

1) Trustworthiness: Are you honest? Courageous? Loyal?

2) Respect: Are you tolerant? (Donald Trump, cough cough) Do you have good manners? Do you deal with anger through positive outlets?

3) Responsibility: Do you do what you are supposed to do? Do you plan ahead? Do you do your best, and give 110%?

4) Fairness: Do you play by the rules? Are you open-minded? Do you listen to others?

5) Caring: Are you kind? Are you compassionate, and show that you care?

6) Citizenship: How are you making your community better? Do you cooperate with others? Are you protecting and caring for the environment?

Ask yourself these questions. If you're answers are positive, keep it up! If you have some areas that you would like to improve upon, I can add another blog if anyone would like on HOW to improve upon certain aspects of your character. I hope you enjoyed this blog, even if it was a little lengthy.

Live long and prosper,

Alyssa :)
