These past few days have been scholarship days. Scholarships are both beautiful and repulsive. The beautiful part about them is that they are free money for college. The bad part is that you are competing with thousands of other people. But, the beautiful outweighs the bad, by a ton.
The place I have started is at Collegeboard.com. They have a scholarship search that can be tailored to your every need. The number of scholarships that come up are amazing! I got close to 100 for being a Latina!
Scholarships are great chances to show off your talents, whether it be writing or singing. Scholarships also come in various amounts, from $50 to a full paid tuition at the college of your choice. Although you have to apply (which can get gruesome), it is well worth it. Never say "I can't do it." How will you know unless you try? Universities want students. Nowadays, cost is no excuse not to go to college. Personally, my parents don't want to pay to send me to my dream schools, so I really have to work at scholarships and financial aid packages. Just about every school offers some kind of financial aid, so never, ever pass up on an opportunity.
My advice for today is this: Ask your counselor about scholarship applications, Google "scholarships" and have your parents help you fill out a FAFSA form. When you are applying to college, be sure to say yes to the "will you be applying for financial aid?" button.
