Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Things, things, do we need any of these things?/ **My First Blog Post**

So my birthday is coming up next week and typically people will continually ask "What do you want for your birthday?" (As a timid child I never really liked answering that question, even if I did want something) But I seem to find that the older I get, the less I really want material "stuff". Yeah of course everybody likes gifts (who doesn't?), especially unexpected ones from your significant other or when your parents actually buy you something cool and not the knit sweater your mom swore you'd like. But ultimately what is "stuff" and what does it even mean in our lives? We buy bags and shoes and lotions and $12 shampoo that's supposed to make our hair more voluminous, but does any of it really enrich our minds or bodies? Maybe coming from a lower-middle class family has always taught me to be humble; although we were never destitute, we never went on vacations every summer or had extras for expensive electronics or outings. But either way I seem to find my most memorable and fun experiences to be ones which make my mind grow: Like watching a really impactful documentary, finding an awesome book at a bookstore, listening to an album that changes your life, hearing an influential speaker at school who changes your mind on everything you know, reading a poem that makes you write it down and pin it to your wall. Most times these little simple things are what make me smile and realize "Gas prices are high, but hey, the world is pretty dang beautiful".

So I guess all I have to really say is, donate or sell your clothes to a consignment store that you just have sitting there in your closet not being used, go thrift/vintage shopping and find a $4 shirt that you absolutely love, watch a documentary on the Chicano/a movement and be intrigued by your heritage, drive for no reason and clear your head of all the superficial clutter we're fed today, and embrace the simplicity of the world. And, heck, just be thrilled you're beautiful and alive.

You are so right! I think that a lot of people don't realize that putting too much emphasis and importance on material items brings unhappiness. If only people could realize that there is much more to life than just what we chose to consume; then at that point everyone would be a lot happier.

I completely agree! As you grow more mature, you realize that the material things don't really matter in life. IAnd well said: "embrace the simplicity of the world". Sometimes we get so caught up with  stress, frustration ad anxiety, that we forget to embrace the little moments that make life worthwhile.
