Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Ah grownups, either they are yelling at us for ignoring the overflowing trash can, or lecturing us about how we just don’t understand the way life works.

Attending a lecture/presentation at the Plaza theatre (where renovation are taking place and looking great) by Community Scholars only proves the point that grownups will always find fault first.

I was amazed at the results the groups made, what to do with Asarco, how to lower pregnancy rates in teens, how to revive the economy, how to retain recent graduates.

However, when the questions portion of the evening arose many hands rose from adults to poke at their weak spots.

It’s understandable that adults, especially parents attempt to make us better people, but at the back of my mind I wonder if they keep pulling us down to make themselves feel better?

Selfish proposition from my part, but I always hear the negative first when I accomplish something.

Oh you got into college, one grown up would say, that’s great, but you couldn’t get more scholarship money?

It’s like a shot to the heart.

Mija, you should have worn something that fit you better, a mother would say after you bring home a first place trophy.

Now that I’m playing along the teen and adult border, I see both sides, but my heart still belongs to the child side.

I don’t understand a mortgage, why would you pay double the cost of your home?

I proudly check off the dependent box in forms.

I’ve checked with my dad’s insurance policy to assure myself I will still be covered until my late 20’s, early 30’s.

Shameful, immature, or just scared of growing up are all good assumptions about me, but at least I can still hear Tinkerbell (Peter Pan reference, get it?)
