Texan Beauty

Texan Beauty Sometimes it's hard to see the beauty in your homeland. When people think of wild animals, it's common to think of tigers, elephants, monkeys, and lions- rarely does anybody imagine the animals native to their state. Here in Texas, we might not have biodiverse tropical rainforests, but there is a level of beauty. Nature's beauty in Texas best represents itself in Big Bend National Park.  What kind of wildlife does the average Texan imagine to inhabit their state? A high school…See More

Senior Year: Day 2

Day 2 was actually better than the first. I was worried because I had two AP courses on that day, and all new teachers. However, the Psychology teacher is very organized in her lesson plans, and it seems as though she set up the class to make it easier on us. She doesn't do after school or Saturday tutoring, and has already given us our homework ahead of time. As for Statistics, it kind of seems like a lot of work and does do Saturdays, but the teacher said if I cannot make it I can go during…See More

Senior Year

I know it's an overrated topic, but I'm going to talk about my school life. Yesterday was my first day as a senior. This year, I am going to have some of the best classes I've ever had. AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, Art 1, and PE. Yesterday, I went to Environmental, PE, English 4, and US Government.  According to the syllabus, AP Environmental seems manageable, and not too stressful. There are no study sessions after school or on the weekends, and the homework is assigned weeks in…See More

The Best Farms

Posted on August 8, 2017 at 8:05am 0 Comments

I would like to highlight two special places- Vital Farms and Organic Pastures. These farms commercially sell eggs and dairy products, but both are Certified Humane, and offer the best care to their animals that I have seen in these industries.

Vital Farms, which produces eggs, is made up of several family-owned farms, all of which have been inspected and deemed humane, through the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFCA) guidelines. The hens are pasture-raised, meaning that they each have 108… Continue

Handy Dandy Baking Soda

Posted on July 6, 2017 at 5:16pm 0 Comments

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), commonly known as baking soda (not to be confused with sodium carbonate or washing soda, or baking powder, a mixture between baking soda and cream of tartar), is mostly looked upon as a cooking agent, but it has so many other uses! In cooking, it works as a leavening agent in replacement of yeast because exposure to heat and acids, such as its “best friend” vinegar, the powdery white substance produces gas, giving treats like pastries, bread,…

Things I Thought of

Posted on July 5, 2017 at 5:00pm 0 Comments

Imagine a meterstick. Both ends say “extreme” and the middle says “balanced.” There is no good or bad on this spectrum, just deviations from balance. This tool can be used to measure anything, but the mean, or balance, might be perceived differently by different people, like bad sampling leading to a faulty confidence interval. Only God can see the true mean (pun intended), the true balance, and the true measure of things. That is why we are not to judge.…

Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices

Posted on June 11, 2017 at 1:19pm 0 Comments

Just recently, an amazing new policy was proposed- Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices. This policy would ensure that companies using the USDA Organic label refer to “humane “ treatment of animals. Yes, more work needs to be done before the standards require 100% humane treatment, but it is far better than what is required now.

Some of the new standards include:

  • A minimum space requirement…

Hi Taylor,

you asked me about the Women's March. It was in January 21 one day after Trump's Inauguration. It was a march to show that people around the country believed in equality for all genders. Here's more information on it https://www.womensmarch.com/global/

And yes, I heard about the Scientist March! I hope it really happens.
