When I turned twelve my parents got a divorce and I boarded a plane to a Fort Worth, Texas. My mom came to America from El Salvador in 1977 and has worked as a house cleaner ever since, so when we came to Fort Worth that’s what she worked as. Since residing in Fort Worth, living in a household run by a single mother with a low income has been very difficult. My mom has always only made enough money to support my brother and I with food and a place to call home.
While…

I am proud to live in a time where more than ever before, women are celebrated for their strength and determination. I am grateful for my own upbringing; I was raised to appreciate my heritage, to appreciate the gifts I was given and to work hard to achieve my goals.
I appreciate Latina celebrities who raise our status in the world, but even more than that I appreciate my mother, my aunts, my grandmother. These are women who have overcome a great deal of adversity to create…

Ahh awards season! For some of us, the favorite time of the year. A time where we can see some of Hollywood's biggest and up-and-coming celebrities all decked out for the finale of the all of the awards shows combined, the Oscars! Although lengthy, with coverage beginning at 10:30am and ending at showtime, the Oscars still receives many views and is talked about strongly the next day. Although some may think that that Oscars is a bit 'upscale'. While it is indeed among some of the most…

There is a show airing on Monday nights on TNT called Dallas. The show is actually a continuation of the original television series, which aired from 1978-1991, of the same name. The original series centered on the Ewings, a genuine Texan family filled with greed and vengeance, who fight for wealth and power. From what I have been told and researched, Dallas was a big deal back in the day. People loved to watch the secrets unfold, the vows broken, and the…

Europe did not have the wealth it does now. Europe accumulated wealth by exploiting the people and resources of lands it colonized. Before colonization, the lands outside of Europe were able to enjoy their own resources and to have conflict between groups from within their own continent. After Europeans invaded their lands, they brutally abused them in several ways. Europeans committed genocide against all people of color, brought diseases to non-European lands, and replaced non-European…

My appreciation for time is not something new. From a young age my sister and I have always been fans of countdowns. We made countdowns for birthdays, vacations, Christmas, last day of school, first day of college and my most recent countdown was "Countdown to Puerto Rico" (look at the picture I included!). I will finally be home this Saturday! I have never wanted spring break to come so badly; one would think that as the years go by(having six years of experience living abroad)…

Earning an MBA requires both a lot of time and financial investment, but the rewards include greater job opportunities and a chance for a higher salary. It’s not a stretch, then, to think that pursuing a Ph.D. will afford even greater opportunities, but it may not always be worth the additional time and money. For example, if you earned an Internet marketing MBA, would…

BIG NEWS ladies!
Violence against women is a gruesome and widespread issue that plagues our country. While many organizations can afford to be loud about the issue in an order to see some resolve, other more personal stories often go unheard. Many women suffer silently under the roof of an abusive partner, while many more keep quiet about rape, to name a few such stories. It’s not always easy to escape the situation, the fear, or the memory. Though the problem has not been solved,…

I've lived in Thailand for almost a year now, and it all happened through a gradual move. I first moved to Paris- a city considered popular all around the world- where I worked as an English teacher. There, I met many people who knew more about traveling to Thailand. People in France consider Thailand to be a popular tourist destination. It is after all, not…

Work! Work! Work! The Dove Springs community of Austin, Texas woke to the sound of eager college students on Feb. 23 ready to spring into action as part of the University of Texas’s Project 2013. Dating back to 1999, The Project began as a student run day-long event and continues to do so commonly referred to as “UT’s largest day of service.” The Project has annually sent out more than 1000 volunteers into different communities in Austin and this year went even…

For me, looking through catalogs for my favorite stores, and then checking out what the mannequins are wearing is really exciting! It's fun to see the styles and put some outfits together in your head, then go and hunt for them in the stores. But... when you find that perfect outfit that you saw on the model and try it on...and it looks TERRIBLE...it's just sad.
This has definitely happened to me, and I'm sure countless other girls. At first, it is really hard to let go of the hype of…
