It's halfway through the semester and I am kind of stressed out!

It can happen to anyone because it can stem from school, work, or personal relationships. I have been feeling stressed lately. What I dislike the most is that there are days when I feel so…

Should Schools Teach Coding?

I’ve been recently lamenting the fact that my knowledge of coding is limited to a “basics of computer information systems” class I took in high school. Though much of my life doesn’t require me to be versed in HTML, I have begun encountering more and more situations in which it would be helpful. Take for example, my job as an editorial intern here at Latinitas. When submitting articles to the online magazine, there is a disconnect between the way a file is viewed when uploaded by…

Do We Mean What We Say?

We use popular phrases often without a second thought. We say things like, "that's cool," "that's sick," "that's retarded," "that's lame" or "that's so gay." Most of the time there's nothing wrong with using popular phrases to express ourselves. However, when we use phrases like "that's retarded," "that's lame," or "that's so gay” to call something dumb, undesirable or uncool we are really saying a lot more than we realize.

Most of us don't mean to, but when we use these terms we are…

One of my philosophies....

I personally believe, that how we see life, and what attitude we have towards every day events, is ultimately what we will get out of life.

Conversely, I am aware of those certain situations that can be seen as nothing more than what they really are. However, although we are imperfect creatures in an imperfect world, I do believe we can make daily efforts to improve, not only…

Being an only child

I am an only child and all of my friends have brothers or sisters. Whenever my friends come over they are always amazed at how quiet and peaceful my house is. They are always telling me that their houses are never peaceful. They claim that their brothers and sisters are always running around and fighting with each other. As weird as it sounds, I wish I had that. I love taking care of kids and I have a lot of patience with them.

I do not know if my patience was created due to…

Maybe it's just me, but, I just love music! While I like all different kinds, I think the best band that has ever lived, is the beetles. They have their own style of music, and one of my friends who is the beetles number 1 fan, says at beetles concerts people were crying and tearing their hair out just because they couldn't get in. But if you haven't heard of the beetles, it's because they were a 60's-70's band. But back then they were the best band that ever lived and certainly one of the most… Continue

Cultures Are Not Trends

Fashion trends are fluid. They change every season as soon as the fashion industry decides what's in and out.

While I'm not a fashionista, I do enjoy a stylish look every now and then. There are some very cute patterns and styles out there, but there are also offensive trends. First let me begin with defining cultural appropriation, according to this article…

MTV's Washington Heights Review

I just finished watching the first episode of MTVs new reality series, “Washington Heights.” The show follows the lives of young adult Dominicans living in the New York neighborhood of Washington Heights, and embarking on their dream career paths. They are JP, Reyna, Frankie, Ludwin, Jimmy, Eliza, Taylor, and Rico. They are musicians, poets, and athletes in addition to being close-knit friends, and per the Dominican standard, they are bursting with “love for everyone.” …

What's in a last name?

So I’m all for Latinos knowing how to speak Spanish. In fact, I often encourage my younger primos to take Spanish in high school, and I advise students at my job (I work at the University of Central Florida) to take up Spanish as a minor.

But here’s the reality: Not all Latinos speak Spanish.

That’s why I take issue with people, of all races, who think that a Vasquez, Rodriquez or Lopez somehow equates to a Spanish speaker.

Although I’m 100…

Ms. Magazine and Me

"Why are you a feminist?  There's no need for feminists anymore."

I have heard and responded to this question more times than I can remember.  There are so, so many reasons to be a feminist, and these reasons do not just have to do with a vague desier to show solidarity with "some group of women" in "some foreign country" who are oppressed.  There are reasons for modern Americans to be feminists - lots of reasons.  One major reason has to do with how we are portrayed in…
