Every woman has a story. I think that it's interesting to look a picture of someone and wonder what their particular story is. For instance, when I look at pictures of my mom when she was a teenager, a young woman, when she got married, and other times in her life, I think about this woman that I may have never met. What was her life like before I entered it? What was she like? Fortunately for me, I get to ask these questions. My mother was born in Chihuahua, Mx. She moved to California when… Continue

In her essay The Myth of the Latina Woman/ Just Met a Girl Named Maria, Judith Ortiz Cofer describes her Puerto Rican upbringing in a strict Catholic home in New Jersey, where she was taught to behave like a proper señorita. I have to say that throughout history and my personal life there are many women who have done great things. Women have achieved many great accomplishments, such as voting rights. I find that women can be very strong and hardworking. A woman that I feel admiration for is a lady from my work. I work at the front counter at some cleaners and she works in the back, cleaning the clothes. I am not sure her age, but I would have to say she is between 60 and 65 years of age. I see how hard she works… Continue

A woman I admire, I must say is my mother. She is someone who I look up to as a role model, counselor, friend, and care taker. Through her success and good intuition she truly has shaped the person who I am today. My mother is someone who I admire because through the many endeavors and challenges she has faced, she has carried them out as a warrior. With her tough character and good-willed spirit she is someone who I definitely look upon with admiration.

There are many women I admire including my mom, grandmas, sisters and so on. Recently I had to write a feature story for class about someone I thought had done something out of the ordinary. Her name is Olivia Chavez and she is my mom's boss. Though I have only known Olivia for a few years I admire her for her many achievements. She has dedicated her life to working with the visually impaired. She loves to travel, hike, and ski. Not only that but one of her hobbies is listening to music that… Continue

Boys get nervous around girls so they try and act silly to talk to them because they don't know how to talk to girls. Sometimes they act too silly and get in trouble. Boys are not always silly, sometimes they are nice. When they like a girl they talk to them and ask them to be their girlfriend. Some boys don't like to be around girls because they think they will get cooties or because the girl isn't pretty or the boy thinks the girl doesn't like them. Only some boys are silly! Not all of them.… Continue

Last week, the House passed H.R. 1388, the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education (GIVE) Act by a roll call vote of 321-105.
The Senate is currently debating its version of national service legislation - S. 277, the Serve America Act.
On Monday, the Senate held a cloture vote on the bill. This cloture vote ensures timely debate and discussion about Serve America, by limiting each Senator to one hour of debate on the bill. This ensures that the bill will likely… Continue

For spring break I wen to Mexico City and to Morelia, Michoacan in Mexico, which is realllly nice. I had never gone to Morelia before and i absolutely loved it. Mexico is full of great food, so much culture, very nice people, and beautiful arts and crafts. Not to mention that the prices are great for food so delicious and for things so well made. I have to say I am very proud to come from a Mexican background even though I was born and raised here in El Paso. Over the break I also had the best… Continue

Celebrities are under the huge pressure of keeping a standard weight to be no more than 115 pounds. If even a little over they are already being criticized by the media. You always see on t.v. shows on the 100 sexiest beach bodies, or best and worst, always comparing bodies. This makes celebrities very self conscious about their weight. Also, just the way the are criticized about gaining weight, they are also criticized about being too thin. I understand that celebrities need to keep in shape,… Continue

The media hype over celebrity weight gain is very upsetting to me. It is damaging to all those who hear these media reports and to the celebrity being discussed. First, it saddens me that such a subject is newsworthy at all. There are so many other pressing issues worldwide that deserve more attention that I won't even begin to name them. Lives are being lost while we are commenting about how J-Lo's bottom looks in her jeans. Second, when the media criticizes a celebrity for gaining weight when… Continue
