My greatest challenge as a woman has been being pregnant. I am 26 years old with a Masters in Sociology. I graduated May 2016 and got pregnant July 2016. This was a huge yet beautiful surprised, that society made it feel like a terrible regret. I was currently unemployed since I was a TA (teacher assistant) at the University of Texas at El Paso, once you graduate you can longer work for the university as a TA. I applied to a lot of jobs, but once they would know I was pregnant I would never…

On this day, International Women's Day, us as women are encouraged to express ourselves as powerful women in life. In reality though, we should keep in mind, being proud to be who we are should not be limited to just one day! We should celebrate each other everyday! This is not only a day to celebrate women achievements in the world, but also to consider what more needs to be done to achieve equality.
The encouraging messages I've seen all day from friends make me happy and I wish we…

Personally, I don't think I would want to be remembered on what I did in life but instead who I was. How I treated those around me and how I impacted their lives concerning typical everyday problems. I know that doesn't sound like much but in the end it won't be the people you worked with or maybe even your family but it will be those friends who you were there for and they were there for you in any and every problem. Be conscious of how you treat those around you because you simply don't…

I am a chica poderosa because I am working towards my dream and accomplishing my goal. It was a challenge to decide what I wanted to do with my life because of my family, to them doing something like becoming a teacher or a social worker is considered a disappointment and that limited my choices to a very few. Both of my older brothers have found their calling in life and everyone supports them and now I'm simply waiting for my turn to do what I want which is go to S. Korea to teach English…

I am not the first generation in my family to go to college or to do anything that is considered "special" in my family but I am the first one to volunteer at Latinitas. Although it is not my first volunteering opportunity I am great full for the chances that Latinitas has given me to learn and grow within my community. My oldest brother is married, my middle brother is in the Navy and then there is just me, simple little me with no great talents or awards, but to me that is more than I…

I believe that the "F" word has been given many negative connotations, but in my perspective the "F" word in no more that a personal belief, so it is fair to say that there is no right way to define what feminism is. There are many perspectives in regard to feminism like the radical feminist view or the liberal feminist, but for me the "F" word or feminism is a term for equality of gender in every aspect you can think…

I am the fist one of my family who is able to attend a 4 year university, and I am just months away from graduating. I am fortunate enough to have this opportunity, but I am more fortunate about not having to worry about paying for school because of the financial aid and the scholarships that have been offered to me. I have always thought that education is really important because it is a tool that can help us to achieve our goals. In addition, education opens our…

We are hosting a series of self esteem and self expression at the TLC. We asked the girls to help us celebrate the women's history month by answering some questions.
How do you make a difference in your community?
I like to draw and recycle. – Alicia
I like to keep the community clean and I like to recycle. - Marissa…

Hello Latinas! How are we today? I am actually a little sad this blog-A-thon has come to an end, I was just starting to enjoy the daily blogging! Today the blog is about our future girls, we now move forward to the way we want to be known in a couple of years.
I really don't have an idea of how my future is going to be like, but what I am sure is that I would like to be known for my ethic and true values at any activity I perform. I have always loved to be recognized for something…

As a future Latina hero, what would you like to be known for?
I want to be known as a woman who was not afraid to follow her dreams no matter how outlandish they may seem.
I have been through an incredible journey in the past years of my life. I have learned a lot about life, who I am , and what I want to accomplish . As I have travelled down this never ending learning experience, I have realized that one of the most important…

Giving my time to this nonprofit is a way that I can be seen as doing my job correctly and become a person involved with their community. To me, it shouldn't be labeled "heroic," but rather, learning from heroes who are often silenced during troubled times. I am labeling myself as a the learner, not the hero. I've learned that dedicating time to a nonprofit doesn't necessarily mean volunteerism. There is so much more to this.
In high school I was involved with…

I do hope one day to be a Latina hero and as a Latina hero I would like to be known as someone who was understanding, not scared to voice her opinions, and who was a friend to everyone and anyone who needed one.
In this growing world, so many new things are happening…

I will like to be known as an example for many younger Latinas girls that want to be a professional person in the future. I will like to inspire them to continue their education and not matter what their culture, race, or class. We can all can have the same opportunities.

As a future Latina hero I would be like to be known as the person who gave back and helped strengthen the community. I want to be known for empowering other girls and women. I believe it is important to foster a strong sense of self and confidence to reach success. At times girls may not have a strong foundation to succeed. I want to be known to help young girls attain a solid self esteem and confidence to continue the next generation of strong women. Life is about helping others.

I am a chica poderosa because I have embraced who I am. As I get older, I learn the trials and tribulations of adulthood and realize that as we grow, we learn.
I had a fun childhood. I was an only child and had a close group of friends and family. Elementary school was where all of my fondest memories took place. It was a time of laugher and adventure.
I have a habit of trying to gain acceptance, or a sense of belonging. As a child, I did not understand why I…

I am a Chica Poderosa because I have not allowed myself to give up. I am alive and able to accomplished goals that I've set for myself, but quitting is not the ultimate downfall. Quitting means that you have to let go of something that isn't working for yourself, being counterproductive of your ultimate goals. Giving up means that you are losing hope and faith.
There will be a point where theres obstacles that will possibly be one of the hardest things you have to overcome, but don't…

I am a chica poderosa because I’m proud of my Mexican roots, I’m independent, and I do everything I can to help the Latina community.
I’m a first generation Mexican American and I cannot be more proud. Growing up I had to translate everything for my parents, make doctor appointments for my entire family, and even…
