The second semester of my freshman year in college I stumbled upon a something incredible. You know that student ID that they make you take at Freshman Orientation? The one where you either look amazing or like a child? The one that you hide in your wallet and hope that no one ever asks to see it? Well, it’s time to start using it. Turns out you get crazy discounts at different stores and restaurants by flashing your student Id. I use it all the time and its really quite helpful because…Continue

“There is more to sex appeal than just measurements. I don't need a bedroom to prove my womanliness. I can convey just as much sex appeal, picking apples off a tree or standing in the rain.”
– Audrey Hepburn
It seems like now a days girls will only feel attractive if they have a small waist with a big butt and boobs and are dressed half naked. Girls who do have all of those requirements are considered “ sexy” and land on every guys women crush Wednesday. How can sexy only be…Continue

In the last several years I have realized how much society has changed, especially for young girls, teen girls, and young women as well. Entertainment has influenced girls to think that in order to be accepted into society you must dress and act a certain way. Each year I see younger and younger age groups of girls dressing like the famous people on TV. On Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter I see young girls dressing in little to no clothing when attending concerts, especially Raves. It is…Continue
I grew up on a steady artistical diet of movies and music. For as long as I can remember, music has been an absolutely critical part of my life. I couldn’t go a day without some music having been played in my life and even when I didn’t have any way to play music I would hum and sing just to listen to something. Similarly, movies have been a huge part of my life. From action movies, like Transformers and Godzilla, to dramas, like Remember Me and the Boy in the striped Pajamas, if I didn’t…Continue

On May 23rd, Elliot Rodger’s massacred 6 people and injured 13 others in Isla Vista, California. People all over the country saw them and a flood of comments began to pour…Continue

Ive been losing myself in romance, forgetting what is most important to me. I feel like we all lose ourselves because the feeling of love is just too great. In the spotlight of love we feel it find us and it cradles us making us feel wonderful, powerful, and even beautiful. But when it is gone, we start to shrink feeling unimportant, it belittles us, it leaves us craving more, wishing for it, and waiting for it because without it we will FOREVER BE ALONE. I feel like a lot of people depend…Continue

During the summer we tend to pack on weight because in reality, all we tend to do is sit on our butts all day, eating, watching television, or going out and eating at fast food restaurants. Ladies.. let us go against that norm! Especially if you are a college student. It is said that as a Freshman you gain the "freshman 15." The "freshman 15" is the theory that as a college student you are bound to gain weight. Sadly, the theory does apply to most students.
You might be asking…Continue

Hi my name is Ixchel Perez-Sajquim and I am a 19 year old college student. I'm married and have a 4 year old step-son. My favorite color is blue and I absolutely positively am addicted to sweets and root-beer floats. Like no joke. I'm studying anthropology and communications at UTEP and while I intensely dislike school, I love learning. I have a cat named Elphaba, although everyone calls her Kat, and two dogs named Nox and Serena.
This is me summed up into about 150 words.

If you aren’t actively involved in something during the awesome down time that is summer, it can get pretty boring. Even those lucky enough to score a job, internship, volunteer work, etc., can have some days where we simply have nothing to do. Those days can be fun if you like laying back and vegetating for a while, but even that gets tiresome. Or, if you’re anything like me, down time is hard to enjoy because I simply can’t sit still…Continue

Based on my understanding of music and its effects is that it speaks to anyone in its own manner. This is probably the reason many of us choose to single ourselves out, unknowingly of course, by putting those ear buds/phones, or phones in our ears.
It's like every one of us wants to channel our feelings within our song, by our lonesome selves. This can be done while waiting for a bus and letting our eyes wander to the others who may want to sit on the bench, but you are too stubborn,…Continue

It has been a month since my ex and I broke up. After dating for 11 months I honestly thought that things were great, of course we had ups and downs but I never imagined that he would hurt me the way he did. I will not go into details but I will say this..Ladies, we are young, smart, and beautiful Latinas. As we grow up, we are going to meet new people and date. We tend to fall too hard, too fast. We get so caught up in our emotions…Continue

In highschool, I thought very highly of myself for staying up until 2 or 3 a.m. I imagined I was getting in some practice before college, and I was thrilled at the idea that I was preparing myself for an exciting and fun-filled life ahead. This became a half truth in college. Yes, I am staying up late and this time it is past 3 a.m. on a regular basis, and yes it is…Continue
I just spent the last hour notating FB posts that young girls put on their feed as a means of laughter or seriousness and they all have in common the fact that they learn from each other and therefore perpetuate a cycle of not knowing the seriousness of who may watch them.
For example, posts of Rihanna and her now ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, giving the message that if you say long enough or endure the "ups and downs of a relationship" you too can conquer their partners demons and…Continue

These past few weeks I've been dealing with several friends and young girls dealing with self-esteem. It especially catches my attention when girls say to a magazine "Why can't I be this skinny?" But the truth is, they're not. They were altered with technology to make it seem as if they're "perfect", but are they really? Along these talks, I had the chance to write a poem specifically on this topic which I hope you like and give any feedback…Continue
