Disrespecting Latinas because of thier skin color

Hello ladies :) Today I am bringing you a blog to read about and maybe take into consideration. This blog post happens to be about Latinas getting disrespected and judged by there skin color.

I myself volunteer at a high school were I go and help out a teacher I have known for quite sometime. It happened to be lunch time for the students. So I had gone to enjoy lunch myself outside and sat down at one of the lunch tables. As I sat down there happen to be 2 other young ladies who…

Immigrant Mom Treated as a Criminal and Loses Custody of Her Own Child

I've been following the story of a Guatemalan woman in the MidWest who was seized in a raid, was undocumented and as a result incarcerated. Her young son, a baby, was put into foster care and recently a state agency began adoption proceedings with that family despite the mother's desire to reclaim her child upon the completion of her deportation hearing.…

Helping a White Winged Dove- Some advice

I had woken up really late that day since I found it extremely difficult to sleep during the night: Air conditioner on making so much noise and my sister hogging the blanket, it was a restless cold night, I had resorted to getting two shirts and using them as blankets since I was in shorts and a tank top, not until in the wee morning hours that my sister finally noticed that I was indeed cold. Once I woke up I went into the kitchen and no one was there, but at that moment my dad came in with…

The Latinas Taking Over The 2012 Olympics

Ever since I was little Olympic athletes have amazed me. My favorite part of the Olympic games has always been the gymnastic competition. Mostly because two of the greatest female gymnasts the U.S. team ever had shared my name, Dominique Dawes and Dominique Moceanu. My name was the only thing I shared with these women though, they looked nothing like me. As a child I had never watched a young woman who shared my Mexican American heritage win big at the…

To My Future Children

Maybe it was the girls from Latinitas Summer Camp or the thought that someday I might have a purpose at the Olympics, but mainly I blame it on Pintrest that lately I've spent my afternoons looking forward to raising my children. I believe it's a myth that females plan their wedding since they were five because even at the age of twenty, thinking about the day I get married bores me. Wait, wait, wait. I'm optimistic about this though because I believe the happiest wedding cannot even begin to…

Something I appreciate

In my life I am grateful for many things, and little situations trigger me to remember that. Today it was appreciating a friend of mine. I woke up with the “Sexy and I know it” song stuck in my head, particularly the part where they sing “wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle yeah!” I have a friend whose last name is Wiggs, and everyone calls him Wiggy. I instantly thought of him, and texted him this morning that I heard the song and thought of him. We continued talking and it’s amazing how we…

Glee was the new big thing when it came out. It was such a big deal. There were people who loved it and those who hated it. I know that I was one of those who really really liked the show. It was probably because I had been in choir since I was in seventh grade. So right after I saw Glee I remember I felt so so excited and happy to be in choir. And I hoped so much that we would do something like they did in the show. I thought that the way they changed the songs, the rhythm, tempo, and how…

30 day challenge- Drawing

16 days ago I purchased a Male Model Figure Doll at Michaels and I decided to do a challenge, draw my "model" for 30 days. Challenging? Yes. I never really have put a challenge on my self, so it was something new.

It is day 16 and I have already grown bored of this challenge. Why? Because im drawing the same doll every single day! I have noticed slight improvements like anatomy of the doll, lights/shadows, placement, and perspectives. I will still continue this challenge.. but…

Signs of Toxic Friends

Having a friend with low self-esteem can be damaging to the way you perceive yourself, especially if you spend a lot of time together. At first it may not be noticeable but with time if you begin to feel hurt by his or her remarks during conversations then be warned it may be time to step away from this individual. It is never a good sign to feel judged or attacked by someone when you want to confide in them. Signs of a toxic friend are:

1) Demands…

I'm Hungry - A Stream of Consciousness

I was going to write this inspiring post about the Olympics, and I still might, but I keep getting interrupted by the growl of my stomach. I am really unable to think of anything else. I can't even formulate this sentence without thinking about food. Food. I've been wanting a burger for quite some time. In-N-Out. Or pizza. Interesting fact: I don't like cheese, so my pizza is pretty much a triangular breadstick; it's unusual but I love it…

English Only

So let us think of a world where English only laws are implemented in the U.S. Don't even taken into consideration current immigration policies and debates because this is not about that all. Hmmm…Right. Okay, so, let’s ostracize 16.3% of the total U.S. population. No, wait, let's say that another way. Let us exclude a vital part of culture and heritage for 50.5…

Did we do the right thing?

Just a couple days ago me and my brother caught my little fifteen year old sister doing something she shouldn't be doing, smoking. She was smoking in her room with her friend and obviously the smell made it obvious. My mom wasn't home and me and my brother weren't sure of what to do. We talked about it and we made the decision to not tell my mom and have a talk with her. We let her know we weren't going to stop her because it was her body her decision, we simply let her know of the…

I have never in my life met a group of such inspiring young women who are striving to make the world a better place. My master plan for this summer was to work full time to pay for my upcoming college expenses. However, I found myself feeling cursed at my bad luck of finding a job. Who would have known my curse would turn out to be a great experience when I took the step of becoming an intern at Latinitas. All the women I have encountered in this organization are sweet as bread and are not…
