Civil Rights in the 21st Century?

It has been decades since we last experienced a Civil Rights Movement in the United States.  The U.S. is known to be the land of the free, of equality, land of opportunities, and a country with cultural diversity.  If that is so, how is it that the nation has not been able to free itself of prejudice, racism/discrimination, racial profiling, and stereotypes?

Sadly, minorities continue to be looked down at by the White Supremacy.  The Latino and African American populations continue…

New Nail Polish as Defense Against Sexual Assault

Recently news has come out that a new nail polish is being developed, known as Undercover Nails , that will help girls in defense against sexual assault. The nail polish is designed to change color when coming into contact with common date rape drugs, so that if a woman dips her finger in her drink, she'll know whether her drink has been spiked or not.

The idea came from four young men studying Chemistry at North Carolina State University, stating, "Our goal is to…

Thoughts on being First Generation College Student

I can’t say I had a difficult childhood everything was so easy for me, I went to a great private school in my hometown, I took as many extracurricular classes as I wanted and I didn't start working until recently.

But my parents had it so different; my dad had to start working when he was 5 years old to support his mother and 4 sisters, he did this by selling copies of a comic book, selling candy on the streets and cleaning shoes, later by the age of 15 he started working in a boot…

Alone time can be the BEST time

Ever get so caught up in life where you forget to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride? It hit me yesterday that I hardly ever take the time to enjoy life.

I was on my way to go to lunch, alone, which was completely different, but fine with me. As long as I had my cell phone to look at my social media, that was all that I needed to entertain me. I decided to sit outside because it was such a beautiful day, and, I never get the chance to sit outside anymore—I am always cooped…

"Back-to-School Beatitudes: 10 Academic Survival Tips"

As many of us are now beginning a new school year, I thought I would share this really great article with academic survival tips. I absolutely loved the advice!

Here was my most favorite tip:

"Be confident in your abilities. If you feel like a fraud, you very likely are suffering from impostor syndrome, a chronic feeling of intellectual or personal inadequacy born of grandiose expectations about what it…

Telling me to smile is like telling you to close your mouth...while talking

Please don’t tell me to smile.

Please, don’t tell me to smile.

Just don’t tell me to smile.

I say, “Tell me” on the basis that most men don’t ask. They disrespectfully tell me to do so as though they control what is going on in my head.

That is beside the point though.

Perhaps, I am alone in this city and am too busy listening to the running commentary in my head to give you a wholehearted smile.

Maybe I am lonely and don’t see your face as…

Letter to my 8 yr. self

I see you. I see that you are hurting.

I’m sorry I didn’t better equip you with a stronger voice to tell others that you hurt.

You were taken advantage, but I am here to tell you, “it wasn’t your fault.”

You know this even as a young girl. You know this even though you are a prepubescent girl. You feel like you take too much space, the fact that you ate too much, felt confused over those nights and the possibility that things just never go as they plan i.e. guys,…

The Misconceptions of Depression

I’ve had depression for periods of time my entire life. That’s not to say that I’ve never had long moments of happiness, I have, but it’s always been fifty-fifty. There are different things that have triggered it, but the dominant reason was not being happy and satisfied with my state of life. I’ve never taken medication for it and I don't want to for the time being.…

Back to School

It's that time of year again. You can see it in the aisles of Target, Walmart, and your local grocery stores that have the supplies ready for buying. Time to come back to school. For many of you all and my past self included, coming back to middle or high school is kind of a drag. But for college, the reality could not be more different. Not everyone might be as tentative to embrace the back to school energy as I was in my grade school years, so if you are excited, stay excited and this will…

Anti-Immigration Convoy through El Paso

An anti-immigration convoy, including a fleet of several cars, made its way through El Paso on Sunday, August 3. The convoy was making the journey from California to McAllen, TX, urging messages of, "Secure the Border", "Stop the Invasion," and "Stand for America."

The convoy was met by pro-immigration rallies held by the Border Network for Human Rights, stating that their anti-immigration message was not welcome in El Paso, and that their message was anti-children and anti-American.…

Camp helping recap

When I first found out I was going to be an intern at Latinitas I had no clue what the programs were about, even though I did some research you never really know what the environment of the space is really like, I just knew that they published magazines for Hispanic girls.

Now that I spend the month of July working with…

The electro magnetic waves heard in…
