Roaming the halls of a high school set in the middle of suburbia, it's easy to stand out among the flowing wave of normality and regularity. The surprise individual, the one that stands out because of the hijab they wear, the color of their skin, the bright freckles on their face, their neon dresses, the holes in their clothing, their painted face, and the bright, dangerous red they've colored their hair with drowns and sinks into the waves of "normal" like an anchor. One that will not be…Continue

Im fine, Im fine..... dont worry, just keep on going.
Hold your head high! Let them know you are not afraid to speak!
I look around, same faces every morning, everyday, never changes.
Im comfortable with people I know, one of my close friends, lets go get breakfast! Talk or hardly talk, what ever her mood is, I know my distance.
The bell is going to ring, same faces I must see, say "Good Morning!" with a smile that shall…
Going back home is always a bittersweet experience for me. It is so great to see all my family again and eat all the food I had been craving. At the same time going home always reminds me how much things have changed, and also how much I have changed. One thing I realized this Thanksgiving break is how bad my Spanish is getting.
Every year that I am away from home it seems my Spanish gets worse and my Spanglish improves. While in El Paso I found it harder than ever to have a…Continue

Here they come, hear those hoofs hit the cold, damp earth.
No, Hear those foot steps hit the cold, hard ground.
Hear them breathe, heavy, cold. Is this place to high for you?
See them amazed, haven't they ever seen such a place? We live here, in this cold, enchanted forest.
Hear the horses snort and breathe, we watch along this trail, green left and right, can't believe this place is alive. Where can they be, these Great…Continue

This month was the month of being grateful. People posted on Facebook what they were grateful for, and for some reason I didn't stop for a second and think about the thinks that I am grateful for, like family and friends, a roof and food for everyday.
Now, the day after thanksgiving I am grateful for having a great father. May be he wasn't the best, maybe he did many things wrong, maybe he did not took care of me or my brothers, but he was there and he loved me as much as he could.…Continue

I grew up watching Disney and Nickelodeon, the shows that were on during my early years will always be a part of childhood. Besides the clothing and the technology used in the shows, the whole look of the protagonist has changed. The blonde, funny all american girl that was popular in the 90s and early 2000's now has evolved into a different image. As I flipped through the old channels that I grew up and identified with, I came to understand that the new image is…Continue

Thanksgiving, the one National day to sit down, enjoy a lovely meal with your loved ones and give thanks for any personal reason. Like most people, I am thankful for my family, friends, education, health, etc... But as the celebration approaches I have come to realize, that all this time I was forgetting to give thanks for 5 very important factors, without them Thanksgiving would not be the same. I give thanks to my 5 senses:
Sight: I am thankful that I can see, so…

the month to be grateful, but doesn't we should be grateful the whole year?
there's people dying, with hunger, without anything...
let's try to be grateful everyday, every morning or evening. Not just one day..

When someone says the word "hero", what comes to mind? What does a hero look like? You probably think of strength, power, a fighter, or maybe someone who relies on their fierce intelligence and intuition (think "Spidey-sense") to rise above the challenge. If someone was to ask you to name some heroes, we think of a webslinger or Man of Steel. It just comes so much easier in the mind's eye. We see them everywhere, donning capes and costumes, rescuing women from evil villains or disasters.…Continue

These toys for girls that have been coming out lately have gotten me to fired up angry. I don't want my kids conditioned to think they have to like some toys over others because they're "for girls" or they can't play with a toy because it "for boys". UGH! Then there's this, a game that simulates primping and beautification as a cay to climb the social ladder and gain friends. LAME-O if I do say so myself.!! How does this make you feel?…Continue

These girls really enjoyed the lesson on improving photography skills. A few weeks before, there were some girls who said they would like to be a photographer someday. They got the chance to improve on their skills and see what it would be like to put this dream into action. They also just had a good time and got the chance to work in groups.
Here is what they said about photography:
"me gusta las fotos de la familia, los perros, los gatos, y de bebes. Tambien me gusta sacar…

This week, the ladies learned some photography skills and put them to the test with some photojournalism and scavenger hunts! They had a great time! In their journals, they wrote about why photography is important and their experience, as well as what they learned in our workshop. Here is what they had to say:
"Photography is important for memories. Maybe you want to remember a moment: photography helps you to remember those. I learned that we need to put fill flash sometimes and full…Continue

I am thankful for cold, sweater weather days.
I am thankful for the warmth I get to come home too.
For my sisters warm hugs and my brothers humor.
I am thankful for my mama's hard working, loving hands.
My father's endless encouragement and motivation.
I am thankful for every single gray hair on my grandparents heads. I am thankful I can still see that gray hair without having to dream or remember.
I am thankful for warm, homemade mexican meals.
