“Katniss is the hero, but she’s not very heroic.”
I stared at the sentence, squinting my eyes judgmentally. Immediately, I had counterarguments at the ready, mentally listing moments of heroism and bravery and self-sacrifice that our girl, Katniss, had done thus far in her (movie) journey. I skimmed briefly over the other words in the…Continue

What am I thankful for.....that is a vary difficult question."Why?," you ask. Because when you open your eyes (may they be blue brown, green or hazel) everything is beautiful even the little things have easily earned a thank you of some sort and sometimes never get one. For instance, the garbage truck man who hauls him self out of the warm covers into a scratchy suit that smells of coke and rotten bread at the crack of dawn. He climbs into a rumbling truck that while…Continue

As a Latina I know we are a proud race, we always have been. That being said, our outlook on life has changed since our abuelos were our age. I would first like to point out that we have not always been as free as we are now, obviously. There was a dark period in history that allowed people to be as discriminating as they wanted and sadly the dark period still hasn't fully passed yet. Granted there are more opportunities for us now than in the 1950’s and 60’s. Which leads me to my next…Continue
It's Thanksgiving week and I'm super excited for all of the wonderful movies that I've seen and been looking forward to seeing for months (or weeks).
First off, the Hunger Games: Catching Fire (don't worry, no spoilers here). To be honest, at first, I hadn't wanted to go see the movie. I didn't like the second and third book all that much, so I didn't plan on watching anything more than the first. Last week, however, my friends decided that it would be great if we all went to…Continue

Last week I attended a journalism convention with my school publication in Boston, Massachusetts. While there, we all attended numerous sessions that would help us as young journalists. The sessions emphasized on how to conduct better interviews and write better stories. Capturing your audience's attention and maintaining it all has to do with the tone of your article.…Continue

This past Tuesday I got the opportunity to watch the advanced screening of the Hunger Games Catching fire and let me tell you it was the BOMB! I'm not a big reader so when I heard about the books I didn't even bother to check them out. Then, after hearing all sorts of comments about the books and with the release of the first movie I decided to go watch it.I loved the first movie because of Katniss.I love the fact that she sacrifices herself for her sister. She volunteers as a tribute for the…Continue
During the Be Unique Workshop the Latinitas girls wrote about a strong role model in their life that they think rocks! Here are some of their responses.
My role model would be my sister because since she was 14 years old she was already working and finished high school and college and she worked when she was in school and now she is working because she studied her career.
Zendaya because she tells everyone to follow their dreams and life has…Continue

Since I moved to the U.S, I realized that today's parents doesn't seem to care if their kid wants a tattoo or not. At first I thought it had something to do with the U.S culture. Now days, people want to get a tattoo because it simply looks cool, when back at my original country, if you had a tattoo, it meant that you are some kind of criminal. Not only getting a tattoo can be a cultural thing, but it is also trending in our generation. Just recently, we have seen many people, among them…Continue

This past Monday Latinitas hosted a self image boosting workshop for girls in the El Paso community. I had the chance to help out and see the girls experience all the fun and creative activities that helped them think about all the things they love about themselves and how beautiful each of them are. I feel that the girls learned a lot about how society sees and treats woman but that there are many other strong woman out there who are fighting against these odds. That we as woman cannot rely…Continue

I thought that the girls responded in a positive manner to the documentary and all the activities we did, the essay and painting activities were a good outlet for the girls to be creative in different way. In my opinion self esteem is something that comes from within a strength that gives you confidence to feel good even if you don't think you fit in society's standards. Beauty is a feeling and is a personality trait that you can develop yourself by thinking positive about yourself and…Continue

This past Saturday the Latinitas volunteers and I had the the chance to experience a new workout craze known as Crossfit. I have heard that it is super addictive and you never repeat the same workout twice. Arriving at the gym intimidated me but thankfully our trainer for the day was very sweet and patient with those of us that were not familiar or experienced with the workout. We started with a warm-up that included stretching with a plastic pipe, then for the next 20 minutes we had to do…Continue
For all you shopaholics and bargain hunters you know that the only thing more exciting than Thanksgiving is the day after, Black Friday! But I think we all know that this day can also get crazy with people wanting massive savings. I think one of the most important things to remember is to be safe. Around this time of year people start to get a little crazy and will do anything for money. Remember when going shopping to always roll up your windows, and lock your cars up. Also when walking to…Continue

This past Monday Latinitas El Paso held a Be Unique workshop at a community center. The workshop helped girl learn about self-confidence and healthy body image through fun games and activities. Today there was a lot of buzz surrounding a particular event that is scheduled to be held this Wednesday on the UT Austin Campus. The Young Conservatives of Texas are no strangers to controversy. Just last month, they held a bake sale in which prices were determined based on ethnicity.
I couldn't believe my eyes. How could they think this was ok? It's not. It's…Continue
Since creating my tumblr account, I have come across so many pictures, videos, stories, songs, and quotes that have truly inspired me. I think I can safely say that the Humans of New York tumblr page has touched me the most. Created by Brandon, Humans of New York (HONY) features photographs of random humans in New York whom Brandon might come across. If he thinks they look even remotely interesting, and he usually believes everyone looks interesting, he'll approach them and ask for a…Continue
Quinceañeras are a beautiful tradition in our Latin community. As many know, a Quinceañera is a party for girls turning fifteen years old. The party represents the transition from childhood to adulthood. Also, young girls are formally introduced to society.
I have been thinking a lot about Quinceañeras since my youngest sister is about to turn fifteen. I don’t know if she…Continue

So, here's a recap for those of you who didn't read Part 1 of this post:

I do think that Katniss plays a good role model for girls. She shows many great leadership qualities such as being selfless for instance. When her sisters name was picked from the drawing Katniss instead volunteered to take her sisters place, she knew her sister wasn't strong enough for the games so she acted quickly to save her. There is also the part in the movie where the smaller girl, Roo, was all alone and Katniss took care of her as best she could even though it was a game. Katniss…Continue
