The Fight is Far from Over

Traditionally, women have been seen as the lesser, weaker sex. After all, during the birth cycle, we stop developing at an earlier stage than males in some aspects. For years, we've struggled to change this stereotype. Lately, though, I've been reading a lot of articles that make me wonder how close we are to truly eliminating gender discrimination.

Recently, a CBS correspondent,…

Media Mobility

Millions of miles away Egyptians are rejoicing in their ability to change history. United, they came together to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak after his 30-year presidency. Although Egypt is on the other side of the world, people all from all countries are celebrating this incredible victory with Egypt.

It's unbelievable to imagine this movement started on Twitter. Who would have thought that a social network would give way to such a massive movement? The internet is such…

I'm Not Your "Mi'ja"

Last December my father showed me an column in a newspaper where I live where a young professional woman was appalled at the use of "mi'ja" in a professional environment. As some of us might know, "mi'ja" is an endearment term that literally translates to "my daughter." In her article, the young woman complained that many coworkers who are older than her had called her "mi'ja" which she found demeaning.

I really didn't think much of the topic and even told my dad that I…

Imperfections of Media Editing

Not long ago, a friend of mine suggested I read an article on photo editing and the media. We all know how controversial this issue is and how important it is to make girls aware of it. However, is it me, or are magazines ridiculously editing magazine covers? Because a few weeks ago, I stared noticing that many of the photo edits are very obvious.

I remember seeing a cover of Britney Spears on Cosmo and her head looked too small for her body. Another time, I saw…

Modern Chivalry

I was on Facebook last night and I found that my friend's status said something close to "Why can't men be more chivalrous?" A few guys started commenting and arguing that it's women's fault that men are no longer chivalrous. One guy mentioned that women don't like it when men open the door.

I personally don't believe any woman is against courtesy As a woman I appreciate a man who is…

Sexy Pride

I recently had a conversation with one of my friends about the way Latinas dress. Because I posted up a previous blog about this and my friend isn't Latina, and asked me if I thought that Latinas dressed more provocatively than women in other cultures. I really didn't know what to answer. I mean, Latinas are very diverse and our ideologies are extremely varied.

Still,…

Cast Your Vote Today!

The United States stands for freedom. Freedom of religion, of speech, of finding a better future, of persuing any dream you have. However, there is no better example of freedom than voting.

Today the competition for seats is on! Senators and congressmen are fighting for seats this election. The senate and congress can either approve or deny propositions made by the president. Depending on what party holds the majority of seats, it will be either harder or easier for President Obama to… Continue

What's on Your Ballot?

My mom and I are both very opinionated people. Today we had a discussion concerning the well being of our community. We realized that the November 2nd elections are coming up and we have no idea who is running and what their platforms are. I did my research and I'm ready to vote now.

It's important that we be…

A Word From the Wise

This past Sunday was my little sister's birthday. We had a small get together at home in honor of her 9th birthday. We had so much fun! It was the first time in four years that I was able to celebrate with her. I am so grateful to have a sibling. I was an only child for a long time. When she finally came into my life I was ecstatic to learn I was going to be a big sister.

I have learned so much from her these past nine years. I remember one time I was feeling down and, as always, she… Continue

Why Can't We Be Friends?

Lately I've been noticing that a lot of young women that I've met are extremely competitive. They sense any female in nearby and they sharpen their claws. Having moved to El Paso recently, I thought making friends would be very easy in such a welcoming city. I was wrong. I've been here six months and I've met more men than women and only a couple have turned out to be genuinely friendly. El Paso isn't even a naturally competitive city, which makes me grateful not to be in a city like New… Continue

Having Curves Shouldn't Be Complicated.

First of all I'd like to say, I'm glad to have the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful community. It's great to know there is a space for young Latinas to share their thoughts and views. I'm very grateful that I'm allowed a space in this wonderful community.

I wanted to share something that has been bothering me. I read an article on Latina.com (…
