The use of the term "The Real World" is thrown around like if it were candy.
My memory goes as far back as my 8th grade graduation when people were asking me if I was ready to enter the last chapter of my life before going into the “real world”—high school.
What exactly is this “real world” you talk about?
The cap and gown hanging in my closet during my senior year told me graduation would open the door to a new world with many…Continue
You can say superstitions fill the empty holes in my life. It's just fun to have a reason behind random habits I maintain.
Maybe all of this started when I was a little girl and my mother would say, "don't do that, because then this will happen." And mamá is never wrong!
In addition to the occasional "limpia de huevo" (egg-cleansing) and touching things I've stared at to avoid "ojo", my dedication to superstitions continues to grow as a young adult in college.…Continue

I successfully survived the horror years of teenage hormones about about seven years ago. It was always my goal throughout my teens to be Ms. Mature and I always tried to be the better person or stay away from situations that I knew would bring trouble. I find myself today as a 21-year-old college lady that stands alone on a campus full of diversity, a sea of people who have lived and learned from past experiences."That's just the way things are," is often the feedback I receive when I…Continue
1) Learn what presidents are on the money bills.
2) Model a bra in my school's bra fashion show for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
3) Take care of Luna (my doggy) the best I can.
4) Don't ditch my school newspaper, University Star.
5) Keep on dreaming even if it breaks my heart.
6) Run across the sprinklers in the middle of the night, holding a loved one's hand.
7) Write letters, send photos, use my post office as…Continue

Maybe it was the girls from Latinitas Summer Camp or the thought that someday I might have a purpose at the Olympics, but mainly I blame it on Pintrest that lately I've spent my afternoons looking forward to raising my children. I believe it's a myth that females plan their wedding since they were five because even at the age of twenty, thinking about the day I get married bores me. Wait, wait, wait. I'm optimistic about this though because I believe the happiest wedding cannot even begin to…Continue
Having a friend with low self-esteem can be damaging to the way you perceive yourself, especially if you spend a lot of time together. At first it may not be noticeable but with time if you begin to feel hurt by his or her remarks during conversations then be warned it may be time to step away from this individual. It is never a good sign to feel judged or attacked by someone when you want to confide in them. Signs of a toxic friend are:
I have never in my life met a group of such inspiring young women who are striving to make the world a better place. My master plan for this summer was to work full time to pay for my upcoming college expenses. However, I found myself feeling cursed at my bad luck of finding a job. Who would have known my curse would turn out to be a great experience when I took the step of becoming an intern at Latinitas. All the women I have encountered in this organization are sweet as bread and are not…Continue

There's times when the world gets too noisy and then I wish I could float on a cloud and watch the world happen from above. Today is a cloudy day and there's puddles on the ground. Driving down roads, I love the breeze my lowered windows invite in. My thoughts are left for the wind to blow away, but there's always those souvenirs of memory that live too deep inside the cushions of my brain. I've never met a boy who invited me to take his hand on an adventure. There's times when I want to…Continue
As you grow older, you realize there's certain people placed in your path that you will never forget. It doesn't matter if they've done something good or bad, they all came with a lesson. Who are you right now? A piece of history composed of memories? A piece of future composed of hope? Never stop believing the people of your past are praying out for you tonight to have a better tomorrow. So never give up on believing in someone you love. They need it, whether you know it or not because we…Continue
Who's to say what true beauty is nowadays? Society has manufactured our perception of beauty with softwares such as Photoshop to "perfect" an image that is unrealistic. Many models are made thinner and transformed into characters that do not naturally look like themselves. So what does this say to younger girls seeking for role models in magazines such as…Continue

I went downtown to Lincoln Park last night and noticed the amazing murals under the Spaghetti Bowl. Many of them illustrated Chicano figures and low-riders. After gathering some information, I realized a grand majority of Chicanos in the 70's and 80's were really attached to their glamorous cars which is why El Paso dedicated the mural area to Chicano lowrider pride. If you've ever been to a car show in El Paso, you will find the polished vehicles dressed in shiny rims and bumpers that…Continue
I don't know what to do and it frustrates me because its something so simple. A few weeks ago I walked into the Marty Robbins swimming pool and a lifeguard passing by waved and smiled at me. I asked him where the kicking boards were since I had my mind set on getting back in shape for summer and the smell of chlorine was giving me a sense of rush to jump inside the water. This lifeguard I speak of, had nothing particular that called out for attention. Dark honey colored eyes that hid behind…Continue
Well, this works for me! Considering my short attention span, this message targets its point across pretty efficient.
Do you ever stop and wander what it's like having to save money to buy a pair of shoes? Most people I know save money to buy brand-name items, a car, or simply waste their money on going out to eat. We always worry…Continue

Every now and then I enjoy watching this video because it causes goosebumps up and down my spine. I was first introduced to it on February in Latinas Unidas (an organization I belong to at Texas State.) However, it wasn't until my recent encounter with this video that really got me wondering: are people in El Paso aware of the…Continue
I saw this video and I thought it was so POWERFUL that I just had to share it with you ladies.
It's that time of the month again where our menstrual cycle begins to act up and causes us go ballistic, but have you ever imagined it can also be blamed for unusual stress or pain in our dental gums? That's right, according to studies conducted by Charlene Krejci at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, "the gingival tissues have lots of estrogen receptors that respond to hormonal fluctuations." This means that our gums can be the warning sign of…Continue
