A Halloween Costume Gone Too Far

You can never be too rich or too thin.

The previous phrase is the current tagline for the controversial "Anna Rexia" Halloween costume.

To those of who who haven't seen this costume this is what it looks like:

As you can see, it comes with a skeleton mini-dress, a choker neckband, measuring tape belt and a "Anna Rexia" badge. This outfit…

Austin Film Festival

Yes, it's that time of the year again. No, not Christmas time... It's time to go watch movies!

The Austin Film Festival has kicked off in Austin! For those of you who don't know much about the festival, all you know need to know is that this festival is the first to focus entirely on writers, rather than filmmakers.

AFF consists of two parts--a conference, which features a series of panelists; and a festival, which showcases never-before seen movies.  More than 180 films are…

"Pancha Massive": Live

So, do you guys remember my blog about ACL? Yes, the one where I was super excited to see a Latin group called "Pancha Massive".

To those of you who need a reminder, "Pancha Massive" is a Dominican-band based in New York City with a unique musical style. They don't seem to have a fixed musical genre, since their music is so dynamic.

I'd thought I''d share this short video I put together of my recordings of the live show at ACL a couple of weeks ago.

To sum it up, the…

Latina or Hispanic?

This topic makes brings to mind the government forms in which people are asked to identify their ethnicity/ race. If you know what I'm talking about, you'll know that there’s one box that says “Hispanic”. Not Latinos. Juts Hispanic. The US government categorizes Latinos and Hispanics together.  This is why the terms Latino and Hispanic are so hard to differentiate. This idea has influenced the way I define these terms, and thus, the how I identify myself.

 According to…

My Favorite Urban Legends

One of the creepiest urban legend I've ever heard of is that of La Sayona.

La Sayona is an urban legend from the plains of Venezuela, but there are several versions of it that come from Colombia as well as other parts of Latin America. It refers to the ghost of a young woman named Melissa, who only appears to unfaithful men, with the intention of seducing them only to murder them later.  Legend has it, that when she was alive, she lived in a small town in the plains of…

Artist-In-Progress

For the"Artistic Latinas" blog topic, I really couldn't decide on my favorite Latina. There's just too many out there. Thus,  I decided to showcase the artist in me. Or at least find it.  I know it's in there somewhere. So I'd like to share a poem, a story ( or part of it) and a video.

I am no poet. But I took a creative writing phase in high school and.. well, this is what I thought good poetry was supposed to look like. However, the reason I'm…

10 Tips for Girls Struggling with Self-Confidence

Once upon a time a psychology professor, (known to his students for asking thought-provoking questions at the beginning of each class) asked his students the following question: Who is the one person you  love the most in the whole world?

Some students smirked and rolled their eyes at the obvious question. The professor, amused, called on one of the students that made fun of his question.

The student gave this answer:

"Umm, my father".

The professor…

Mi Cultura!

What does culture mean to you?

To me, it means the ever-changing traditions and customs that are passed down from generation to generation. Your culture defines you way of life. I know mine does! As a Venezuelan with Arab background, my culture is very unique.

As a young girl, my grandparents use to speak to me in Arabic, and I would answer in Spanish. Hey, if Spanglish counts,  can we say Sparabic?

In some cases, one's culture can limit their worldview, but my…

Discrimination: Issues I've Faced as a Latina

"If you believe in discrimination, it will happen" ~Anthony J.D'Angelo

Although I find this quote to be really interesting, I'm not sure if I completely agree with its concept. Hispanics face discrimination issues all the time at schools and in the workplace. So are we supposed to turn away or close our eyes and pretend that nothing happened? The quote is another version of 'ignorance is bliss', so just ask yourself: how much ignorance are you willing to…

ACL? Wait, I've heard of that...

Have you ever wondered why Austin is called the world's capital of  live music?

No, it's not because we have rockstars wannabe singing on the streets with their guitars. I know, shocking. It's because of an annual three-day music festival known as Austin City Limits

Each year, since 2002, thousands of people come together at Zilker Park to hear all types of music genres (rock, indie, pop, latin, country). I hear that if you live in Austin and haven't been to ACL, you're not…

Spanglish: No es una big deal.

Alguna vez han escuchado the saying change is the only constant thing in life?

Well, languages no son la exception to that rule. Siempre están cambiando and growing mostly based on socio-cultural trends.

Therefore, Spanglish is not necessarily a bad thing. It just happens. Y no es a big deal. It's not a threat porque the language is used "in the moment". Por ejemplo, you use…

My Top Hispanic/Family Traditions

I was born and raised in Maracaibo, Venezuela. And I have a big, loud and crazy family ( in a good way) that I honestly couldn't live without.  We have tons of traditions and customs, but these are my top favorites!

1. Estas son las mañanitas que cantaba el rey David y hoy por ser dia de tu santo te las cantamos a ti!

Who doesn't love breakfast in bed? I definitely do!  Well, my family takes birthdays very seriously.…

Ignorance at its Finest

A couple of weeks ago, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America in Atlantic City. Nina is a beautiful Indian-American woman. Yes, she's of Indian heritage.  Did you pause to re-read that? No,  I think you read correctly. Davuluri is the first woman of Indian descent to be crowned Miss America. And if you keep up with the news,  you'll also already know that a lot of Americans are outraged by this. About a week ago, after the crowning of Davuluri, Twitter exploded with racist reactions against…
