I'll Always Find My Way Back Home

After reading Saray's funny yet inspiring poem "Soooonnnniiiiaaa" and Dominique's beautifully symbolic poem "My Next Door Neighbor" I couldn't help, but look at El Paso and Mexico in a whole new way.

I grew up in El Paso and for the most part took it for granted (and still do). "Boring," "ugly," and "I can't wait to get out of here," were always used as I described my hometown to others. But never once did I realize the true beauties of El Paso. The beautiful Franklin…

In the past year or so bullying has become a serious issue throughout America. It is not just in high school, but in middle schools and elementary schools as well. It is so sad to see that people can treat others this way, especially at such a young age. What is even sadder is what little school officials are doing to prevent the bullying. We see in so many cases of bullying that the student being bullied cries for help, but often times no one is there to listen.

It is…

4th of July!

With the 4th of July quickly approaching, fun events with family and friends are sure to make up almost everyones three day weekend. I am incredibly excited, because this weekend we will be having a family reunion, which I am sure will hold MANY unforgettable stories. My mom's sister and her family are driving down today from Dallas, and I am so excited to see them, they always keep me laughing and my cousins from…

What Is Beauty?

I recently read an article on called "What is beauty and who has it?"

As I read the article I found it to be very interesting. The article asks, "Can beauty be defined by age, gender, color, body shape or size." And it seems that the definition of beauty is changing constantly,…

This past weekend I got into a small fight with my mom over a silly and pointless thing. I was frustrated and mad at her, as I am sure she was frustrated with me. I didn't even want to see her and avoided talking to her all day, which is rare since my mom and I are really close. As the evening approached I realized how could I have been so mad at her for something so unimportant. I immediately apologized for acting the way I did and she apologized to me, even though she…

Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Oh My!

Over the past ten years or so, social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, & Myspace have come to dominate the internet with thousands of Facebook and Twitter accounts popping up daily. However, I recently read that Myspace has been sold & is most likely going to be shut down, as very few people use Myspace today. So that got me to thinking. Myspace was extremely popular when I was in middle school & the beginning of my freshman year in high school, but it has quickly fallen as…

This past semester in my Mexican American Literature and Culture class we had to read Caramba! a novel by Nina Marie Martinez. I love to read so I was so excited to read this book, but others in my class who were not as fond of reading still ended up loving the book.

The story is about a community of Mexican American individuals who face the struggles of relationships, work, spirituality, friendship, community, good vs. evil, and many others. However each individual is…

Finding Yourself

At some point in any young girls life we feel the need to fit in or belong. We want to be considered "cool" or "popular" even if it means doing things that we normally wouldn't do. But with so much pressure to fit in with the "in-crowd" how do you avoid changing who you are, but still be happy?

I think that every girl faces the pressures to fit in, but as I have gotten older I learned that it doesn't matter what shoes you wore, or what hairstyle you have, or if you are…

Latinitas Hot Topic: Teen Mom

This past weekend while I was sitting at home watching MTV, a commercial came on for the new season of Teen Mom. While I have to admit I was excited to see that the show was coming back for another season, I couldn't help but think whether or not the show is playing a positive or negative role in girls' lives as they sit before the tv every week to see the drama unfold.

It has been a constant back and forth debate as to whether the show is giving off a positive or negative…

How Far Will You Go to Make a Difference?

This past week I traveled to San Diego, California expecting to enjoy a nice and lazy vacation, but what I got changed my life forever.

For nearly six long months a group of El Paso women, had been training for the San Diego Rock N' Roll Marathon, which would take place on June 5, 2011. They woke up early on Saturday's and Sunday's and rarely skipped a day of running. By the end of the training process, their legs were tired, but their determination was stronger than ever…
