18 women have come forward to say Bill Cosby, American actor, comedian, producer, director, sexually assaulted them. He drugged and raped most of them. Probably dozens, maybe more, were on the receiving end of his inappropriate sexual advances and many others are probably unable to come forward. I am still shocked how media and the public have difficultly separating someone's public image with their personal life. Wasn't it clear with Robin Williams' suicide that you could be one of the…

Before I can start sharing about this year's national music festival: Austin City Limits, two weekends of star-studded as well as new music on 5+ stages in sunny Austin, TX, I have to reflect on years' past and the wonderful Latino music acts that have showed through the decade. My first encounter with ACL Fest was my first encounter with Amigos Invisibles, back in 2005. The band that never stops playing brings nodes of disco, techno, Latin "gozada" rhythms - Venezuelan beats that evoke…

We had a little chat with Rich Garza, founder/creator of the premiere alternative Latin music fest that takes place in Latinitas' base-city Austin, TX. What was the origin of Pachangafest? Where did the idea come from and what made you do it? I have worked in on touring festivals going back 15 years. These were in the general market but they put an emphasis a wide range of interesting programming to create a… |

Growing up, we learn who or what an alcoholic is. We see the image of the alcoholic on TV and in film. Sometimes they are glamorized in comedies or in reality shows. They are mostly portrayed by men, but an alcoholic can be any gender, young, old, your mom, your dad, your grandparent, your brother. These are lovable people. They are just sick and suffering. What we don't learn about is the other side of this disease. We don't learn about the Al-Anon. The Al-Anon (for adults) and…

The recently released movie Cesar Chavez delivered on so many levels. I, for one, learned Diego Luna is more than a pretty face in Mexican cinema, but is also an important director, someone who grew up outside the American experience who could see the value of telling one of our most important histories. If any of you are taking a social studies class right now in 6th, 7th, 8th grade or high school you are probably learning about a lot of men named Washington, Jackson and Madison…

Latinitas - this is right up your alley.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed into law by President Johnson, is considered one of the most sweeping civil rights reforms since Reconstruction. The act guaranteed freedom and rights for all Americans. Because of his strong personal belief that every man, woman, and child should have an equal opportunity to succeed in the United States, President Johnson utilized the…

I was recently enchanted by a new cartoon character (to me) so Latina, so smart. "Wild Kratts" is a PBS kids cartoon now on Netflix that may be still on general television. It's a cartoon version of two animal experts - the Kratt Brothers who go on adventures researching animals around the world who might be endangered by their environment or man's impact. What was most exciting is their team of scientists who help them become the animals they are researching with special science and…

I visited home recently, New York City, the Big Apple and with my Latinitas' filter noticed a few changes in who was making all that "NY" food I love - bagels, pizza, Chinese. My first stop home was H&H Bagels on the Upper East Side of New York City, celebrated in television shows like "Seinfeld" for having the kind of delicious bagels, fresh and hot out of the boiler that you needn't corrupt them with cream cheese or butter - they are a heavenly experience in themselves. In the past…

Wrote a recent grant application that required only contact information and a poem that reflects Latinitas mission. Disclaimer - had to write this on short notice!
Her numbers are large and fast growing, yet her voice barely heard.
A drop out, pregnant, futureless, media says.
Foreigners, moochers, illegals, the vitriol drolls.
But, we know her better. Her missing narrative.
She’s a writer, producer,…

Expressing gratitude has the most soothing results, sometimes minutes, other times hours later. I find this year I am even grateful for the challenges which have made me grow and change. Regarding Latinitas, I am grateful to all of you who blog, vlog, post photos and express to us some of the most interesting thoughts I come across in my week. I am grateful to certain girl bloggers for telling it like it is (Diamond Girl, age 12) and others who sign on during camp or through our youth…

Despite the deluge of commercials outlining a two-parent, two-child household, for majority of us, Christmas is a ramshackle experience of other kinds of loved ones and, in some cases, avoidance of family stress. Though we all might share the experience of catching 30 minutes increments of the repeatedly shown TBS's "A Christmas Story," what our families look like is as distinct as a fingerprint. My Noche Buena was with close friends and their parents from Monterrey, Mexico. Despite…

Latinitas has the wonderful privilege each year to engage in the national music festival called Austin City Limits, that takes place annually here where Latinitas was founded. It's an amazing opportunity for our young journalists to cover one of the most widely attended music events, nationally. Each year, the festival seeks out some of the most exciting and inspiring up and coming contemporary Latino band or musician that almost systematically blows the crowd away. For multiple years…
