Hi. I am introducing a new blog series about feminism in today's world. There are so many misconceptions about feminism and what is, but in the simplest definition, feminism is equality for everyone, men and women. Feminism is still relevant today because discrimination and inequality still exist in the year 2010. It's everywhere. Many people believe in equality but are afraid of the word feminist because of all the negative stereotypes. The most common one I've heard is that feminists hate men which is not true at all. A feminist believes in equality and opressing men is no different than opressing women which is what feminism is trying to fight against.
I'll start by introducing myself. My name is Cristina Chavez. I am 23 years old and a senior at the University of Texas at El Paso. My major is English and American Literature, and my minor is Women's Studies. I'm about to graduate this coming May, and I am very excited. I plan to pursue my Master's in Women's Studies and then my PhD. Taking Women's Studies classes in college really opened my eyes and made me a critical thinker which I think is one of the most important things in college.
I have good news that I'd like to share which is that I recently found out that I got accepted into the Women's Studies Master's program at Texas Woman's University in Denton, TX! I am extremely excited but nervous at the same time to be leaving my hometown along with my family and friends, but I think it's going to be a good experience for me. I am looking forward to taking that step to make my dreams come true.
I'll end this first blog by saying this: feminism is more than a theory, a class, a lecture, or a book. It's a movement.
