Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Latinitas, do you know who the guy in the picture is? His name is Ryan Gosling (he comes out in The Notebook). He is filming a movie in Austin, Texas.

You may be asking what Ryan Gosling has to do with the Internet. Well, I'm about to tell you a funny story.

Around 2 pm yesterday, every girl in the University of Texas - Austin campus went CRAZY. Why? A girl used her Twitter account to tell the world that she had spotted Ryan Gosling on Guadalupe Street, the most student infested street off the UT-Austin campus. One re-tweet and there were girls RUNNING to find Gosling. They were DETERMINED to see him.

To be honest, I don't even know if he was or was not there.

Obviously word was passed around that Gosling was somewhere in the UT campus. I saw girls with cameras, notebooks and phones out to get a glimpse of Gosling. It was like a scavenger hunt with the treasure being Ryan Gosling.

Members of Communication Council, the student government of the College of Communication at UT, wanted to have a bit of fun (I think). They tweeted that Gosling was in the Communication Building. I happened to have re-tweeted that tweet because I found it humorous. I received around 10 replies asking if it was true or not. I said it was. A few minutes later (after researching on Facebook and Twitter), I realized that the Communication Council members were lying. They wanted to know how many girls would barge into the building. I was told there was A LOT of girls.

Thankfully no one I knew was one of those crazy girls.

This should serve as a lesson to you, Latinitas. Never believe what is on the Internet unless it comes from a reliable source (such as an official Twitter account and news stories). If not, you might face the consequences like making yourself look silly in front of people.

By the way, I'm still not sure if he was even on campus.

I believe it will. That's how twitter works! You can use it at any conference too!

Social media has a huge part of how word spreads around. As I walked around campus, I saw so many girls on Twitter. Twitter was like the alert of Ryan's whereabouts. I wonder how this will work out with Fantastic Fest, Austin Film Festival, Austin City Limits and SXSW.

I love this post. It made me giggle. I can't believe people were posting lies about Ryan Gosling strolling around UT Austin. I like the reaction of the public though. It sounds like girls are crazy but it also shows our innocence. We would literally go bananas for a glimpse of the guy of our dreams. Even if I'm feminist, I'd have the same reaction. Who doesn't want to see a famous star?

Also, note the way social media was in the middle of this fiasco! Without social media the word would have passed on from girl to girl on campus somehow. Now, technology has made it faster and way more fun to try to scope out people or communicate many things. If there really is a famous star parading around campus, make sure you take a picture or video and tweet it in order to pass on the facts.
