American Idol's first winner Kelly Clarkson was the featured cover of Self this month - or was it her? The magazine is getting some heat for slimming Kelly down with graphic design software. The most ridiculous part is Kelly is quoted in the same article on how comfortable she is with her body and can't understand why the press can't accept her curves if she can.
I think I was most heartbroken when editor Lucy Danziger, an idol of mine for editing the defunct Sports Illustrated for Women, actually tried to defend the art department's measure of stretching the photo in photoshop vertically so Ms. Clarkson looked more flaquita. She said something on Access Hollywood like, "we wanted to show Kelly's best essence." How lame. How disappointing. You can't even have any bulges on magazines even if you insist on showing them!
The worst as that these women editors sit and debate the sad state of young women and their body image issues, all the while contributing to them! They actually do sigh and say things like, "poor little girls today - wanting to be so skinny or perfect," as they publish their basura! I worked in NY publishing and have overheard these conversations!!!! When will they ever learn?
