Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

After Ugly Betty... Latinos on TV, where are they?

"Hispanics represent about 27 % of the population in the U.S., but on prime-time TV their numbers are somewhere between 2 and 6%"

The quote above is from my media effects textbook, Fundamental Effects, and while not totally surprising I find the numbers alarming.Furthermore, within these small numbers the roles that Latin@s are offered can stereotypical, which only adds to the problem.

They [Latin@s] are generally represented as less intelligent, less articulate, and lazier than other characters

Latino/a roles in the media, whether good or bad have the potential to largely impact how we are viewed as a whole community.

In my opinion, we've more than certainly proven that  a "Latino" show can be a success - Ugly Betty anyone? Many Latino actors and actresses have won the hearts of America playing Latino and non-Latino roles - America Ferrera (Betty Suarez), Oscar Nunez (The Office), Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis), Jimmy Smits (Sons of Anarchy), Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), etc..

So the question is, why isn't Hollywood hiring Latinos? Why are we still underrepresented?
