So yesterday Marisol and Helen made my day by telling me I was knowledge able and a walking encyclopedia :) So in favor of them I have decided that every Friday I'm going to post some did you know facts.
So the national medical symbol why is it a snake wrapped around a T- shaped rod you may be asking. Well years and years and years and probably some more years ago this symbol came to be all because of small parasite. Ring worms are caused by fungus and can most often be caught if you are around a dirty water source. Ring worms have to carefully removed, because if you do it wrong the worm could break while still in the body which of course is toxic. Doctors came up with the idea of using the T-shaped rod to extract the parasite. The dostors would make an incision wherever the worm was and then wrap the end of the worm on the rod and twirl it out. The doctors would then keep the rod with the shriveled up worm as a symbol that they were true doctors and not witch doctors. Pretty neat huh? :)
*I read this all in a book once that talked about millions of different parasites so I'm pretty sure all of this is factual, but I will admidt I did not research it myself.
