LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

As the proud older sister of a Girl Scout - a Brownie, to be exact - I see this cookie boycott as defamation of a highly respected and honorable organization.

Girls Scouts of America is an organization that stands on the platform of teaching girls fundamental skills and values to contribute to society. They are taught to be respectful, kind, honest, caring, and a list  of other positive virtues -- nothing along the lines of pro-abortion. The Girl Scouts' Twitter and Facebook shared two lists of influential women from 2013, and two of them happened to be Wendy Davis and Kathleen Sebelius, Davis being a pro-abortion gubernatorial candidate and Sebelius asking for insurance coverage of contraceptives.

Young girls are fascinated with the lives of other successful, positive, intelligent women in their lives, whether it is their older sister or Selena Gomez. They admire their style, the way they carry themselves, how they wear their hair, and their successes in life. Whether or not Selena Gomez is pro-abortion or uses contraception is the last thing on these girls's minds. Speaking from personal experience, my 9-year-old sister obsesses over celebrity girls because of the way they dance or sing, not their detailed personal lives.

I do not believe that Girl Scouts's message in sharing the links to those lists of influential women was meant to center in on these two facts about Davis and Sebelius, who in reality are two highly educated women who are making positive strides in their respective career fields. I feel like they are both highlighted in these articles because of their hard work and determination, which are two pillars that Girl Scouts teaches their troops about.

Unless you're on a spring break or summer diet, there is no reason you should not be enjoying a box of Girl Scout cookies!
