Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

It's that time of the year again... well, almost. Okay, okay, so it's more than a month away, but I'm already thinking up some great costume ideas. I'm a sucker for history and I'm in love with the clothes and music from past eras (I'm a little disappointed in my generation's aesthetics), so I'll take any excuse I have to dress vintage. In the past, I've done:

- Audrey Hepburn (specifically Holly Golightly from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's)

- 1920s flapper

- Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (I was named after this song)

- Mario (my best friend dressed up as Luigi... we were cuter than any couple around)

- Mermaid

- Tinkerbell

This year, I have too many ideas in mind! Originally I wanted to dress up as Grace Kelly in Hitchcock's The Rear Window (see here), but then I started leaning more towards channeling my inner 1920s style (again). I recently read The Great Gatsby, and thought about just maaaybe convincing my boyfriend to do a couples costume by having him dress up as Jay Gatsby, while I dress up as his lover Daisy Buchanan (reference pic).

What are some costume ideas you're thinking of? What have you done in the past?

I discovered Pinterest about a year ago, and besides the fact that it sucks you in and never lets go, it's really a great website for these types of things. I searched "halloween costumes," clicked on "boards," and was overwhelmed with the abundance of ideas and DIY costumes posted. So many cute ones for kids too!

Look for yourself and happy costume shopping!

I've seen it, it's one of my favorite movies now :) I also read the book The Paris Wife this summer, written from the point of view of Hemingway's first wife, and although it's about their marriage, it talks a lot about their life in Paris. It's historically correct, but fictional because it's not actually written by her. It reminded me a bit of Midnight in Paris because it revolved around the same characters!

I loved the book! So original, exceptionally written (of course), and just an all-around great story. I found out about the film right after I read it, so I'm pretty excited. AND Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby (he's been my favorite since Titanic). Have you seen the first Gatsby film? It's with Robert Redford in the 1970s.
