Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Drugs & Violence: My everyday view by: Arlette Flores :)

Drugs and Violence: My everyday view

I grew up in a dangerous community, I've been living there since I was 3 and now am 14. I sometimes don't believe how I survived. All I saw was drugs and violence. Like any other children, people thought I'd end up the same: pregnant, poor and stupid. I had friends who were older than me, they tried to get me involved in their business but I'd always knew to not let the current get to me. My friends are now older and they seem to be suffering, they have dropped out of school, have kids, and are among the worst in poverty. I feel bad for them because they are still teenagers and are living an adult life. Right now they could have graduated from high school and gone off to College. Out of all the kids in my community I and my sister Estefanie are the survivors. Everyday when I come home from school all I see is kids smoking, my neighbor handing a secret to the women, all sorts of fights, and poverty.  I am proud to call myself a SURVIVOR.
