LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Latino Voices are not suppose to be funny voices.

Most major news outlets have a branch they like to associate with latinos. For example, CNN Latino and NBC Latino were created to have a Latino voice in news, or as I like to think about it: a way to translate everything into Spanish to serve a Spanish-speaking audience, but still separate from the major brand. Although I may have some issues with this concept, of separating the news and gatekeeping what Latinos have access to through the latino sides of news organizations-- that's a whole other story.

This blog post is about satirizing this concept and trying to generate offensive comedy from it.

The Jeselnik Offensive is hosted by stand-up comedian, Anthony Jeselnik. The talk show is classified as black comedy, satirizing actual news stories and hold panel discussions with known comedians and celebrities. A segment on this show is titled Latino Voices, where the panel speaks in awful latino accents and essentially "voice their opinion" on current events/ topics.

Check out the video here.

In this case, everyone in the video is clearly of a different race and they don't speak spanish. The show, with its title is challenging enough. Yeah, it's going to be offensive. But does that make it okay?

It's not fair to be made fun of when most us are seriously struggling to be heard. Our voices face oppression on many levels... it's nothing to joke about.

I should add, that I've never seen this show before - just the this video. I can't judge the entire show, but the title tells me it's going to get controversial. I guess that's the style of Comedy Central. That's a network that airs South Park, another offensive show I might add.

Have you seen this show before or offensive examples similar to "Latino Voices?"
