College students of multicultural backgrounds from central and south Texas will have a chance to win scholarships as part of a scholars program sponsored by MassMutual South Texas and their corporate partner, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. (MassMutual). The scholarships are open to students of African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, or Hispanic descent and show an interest in pursuing a career in the insurance and financial services industry. MassMutual will award approximately 30, $5,000 scholarships totaling $150,000, nationally. Scholarships to selected students attending four-year institutions will be $5,000 and those attending two-year institutions will be $2,500. ‘’We’ve always been committed to attracting talented individuals to the field of financial services, and in particular to supporting people of diverse backgrounds, both as financial professionals and as clients,’’ said Stephen Collins, MassMutual South Texas CEO. ‘’These scholarships will help deserving candidates to obtain the education and experience they’ll need to become financial professionals and, ultimately, to help serve San Antonio’s increasingly diverse community.’’ The scholarship program’s application deadline is at 5:00 p.m. (CST), May 3, 2013
To be eligible, applicants must: • Be students of African American, Asian/Pacific Islander or Hispanic descent. • Show proof of U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency with a permanent resident card or passport stamped I- 551 (not expired). • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. • Plan to attend a degree-seeking program, full-time at a U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, • U.S. Virgin Islands or Guam during the 2013-2014 academic year. • Be entering sophomore, junior, senior or 5th-year senior year in pursuit of an undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university. • Apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. • Be students of all majors will be considered. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate: o An interest in pursuing a career in the insurance and financial services industry. o Leadership and participation in extracurricular activities.
