I am often astounded at the talent present in our after school program - future journalists, entrepreneurs and vetrenarians - and burgeoning role models. Two weeks ago, along with some outstanding Latinitas program leaders (Steph Meza, Ivy Bejarano and Vianey Luna) in Austin, a group of Latinitas from LBJ high school joined Breakthrough Austin to talk to their younger peers about the Road to College. While their peers slept soundly on a Saturday morning, Corina P. Erica M. and Ana J. spoke in front about 50 parents and 7th graders about the choices they have made and interests they have pursued to find their goals and create a great resume for college entrance. I was unable to attend the actual event and from what I learned, these outstanding Latinitas brought the crowd to tears with their personal stories. I also was so pleased to have Leslie Guererro, Latinitas program coordinator, lead this discussion. I hope this group understands the incredible impression they left on these up and coming young Latinos and Latinas. I also hope they understand how welcome they made parents feel speaking in Spanish and sharing their tales in a bilingual format. Way to go!
