Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

When I look back at my high school years, it seems so long ago! I can't remember what life was like before and how I wished someone could have given me advice. I have a sister who is a senior in high school right now and when I talk to her about school life there is where I remember what I should have done to make it better. I still had fun but I think there could have been things I would have done differently.

First, Get more involved: If you stay involved in extracurricular activities there are more opportunities to meet people and start building a network. You never know if you might need a recommendation letter or need someone to fix the air conditioner in your house?

Second, Get prepared for college: If you don't start setting up a time for you to study it's going to be hard for you to study in college. Believe me, I wasn't used to studying for long hours so I had to teach myself to do so and it took a while to get used to it.

Third, Be organized: Make time for school, set up a time to study for classes, SAT or a new language. Make your priority to gain knowledge but at the same time make time to spend with friends, make new friends, family, pets, and school activities. You won't find a lot of time in college to enjoy all of this so be organized and take the time to just have fun. Also, start getting familiar with an agenda, a calendar to mark down when assignments are due just so you don’t turn them in late.

Fourth, Make Healthy Habits: If you make healthy habits while you are in high school, eat well and
exercise then it won’t be hard to follow through in college. College life is really different and I know I didn’t make healthy decisions and I would suffer from headaches, sleepiness (in class) and fatigue. So take care of yourself.

Fifth, DO NOT PROCASTINATE: this was a huge problem for me in high school. I always thought I would get to it later. Never happened, if you start pushing stuff to the side you tend to forget about it. So when you get an assignment do it that day and you can just get over it and not have to worry about it. Looking for colleges, just do it on a weekend while you’re on your MySpace and check out universities and opportunities out there. Don’t leave stuff that you can do today for tomorrow because tomorrow you will have even more stuff to do.

I think with these 5 tips you can do great! I wish someone had told me this I wouldn’t have struggled so much!!
