While many teenagers will choose to spend their summer by the pool or in front of the couch, others are spending their time making a difference in their communities and gaining valuable experience. Volunteering is a great way for teens to learn new skills, meet new people, expand their academic and professional resume and get involved. Not only will you gain from volunteering but you can make a huge difference in your community.
Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world,” defines the meaning of volunteering. We shouldn’t just stand around and wait for change to happen. So the next time you wish that there were more after-school programs for kids, or that your neighborhood was cleaner, or that disabled children had the same opportunities as others, act on your thoughts and start an after-school program or join an environmental group or volunteer for Special Olympics. There are so many opportunities and organizations to get involved with. No matter what concerns you or what interests you, there is a volunteer position perfect for you.
All you have to do is get out there and donate a little bit of your time and effort. Not only will you feel good about yourself but you will make new friends and gain some hands-on experience. And remember, big change comes with many small changes and your service to the community will make all the difference.
