Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Truths finally told (Answer to Hot Topic: Obama's Back to School Speech)

I've just read Obama's speech, and I'm amazed. I had constantly heard about (at least in Mexico) cry of the people for more efforts from part of the government into education - it's not enough money, its not good enough education quality, not enough professors... But no one speaks about those students (that, admittedly, he treats them very kindly in his speach) that go to school just by inercia, by obligation, to make us loose resources.

It bothers, me, you know? To have people in my classrooms who just don't care about the effort professors, schools, other students do. And I guess (and now from my own experience) it is all teacher's dream to have a room full of students who WANT TO LEARN, and there's even some pride struggle in seeing how many put attention to your class or if you bring a black sheep to the light of learning. BUT THAT IS NOT A TEACHER'S JOB!! Sure, we have to be passionate, but we're not babysitters, nor agendas, nor consciences.

So, students out there: be aware of the responsibilities that come with your privilege of getting and education. It is true: our knowledge will be the cause of many changes in the future - but if we remain in ignorance, in laziness and idleness.. we're not gonna create anything beautiful and useful in this life.
